Bolešov can be explored through a range of different themes: a nature monument whose character changes with the seasons, the summer use of a reservoir, and architectural history that spans the manor house and the parish church. This allows you to choose between nature and cultural themes for your trip and take the time of year into account when planning.
Landscape and Nature Monument
The municipality of Bolešov lies within the Ilava Basin and extends partly into the White Carpathians Protected Landscape Area. Dračia studňa, a protected nature monument, lies in the Bolešov Valley. It includes waterfalls that are particularly prominent in spring after the snow melts; icicles form there in winter. Taking the season into account when making your choice reveals a clear contrast between spring after the snowmelt and the ice formations of winter.
In 1993, Dračia studňa was designated for protection as a tufa mound, a form of georelief. This tufa mound is considered the largest in the White Carpathians. The reason for its protection gives the nature monument its geological significance, while the waterfalls and icicles reflect its seasonal character.
Trails, Water and Events
The Bolešov–Krivoklát educational trail can be reached by bus to Bolešov, followed by a 4.5 km walk along a green-marked hiking trail; the elevation gain is 95 m. Plan your hike using these route details and check local trail conditions before your trip. The Trenčiansky okruh route also passes through Bolešov.
During the summer months, the Bolešov Gilianka Reservoir is used for swimming and fishing. If you plan to swim, check conditions locally. The Bolešovské hody is one of the cultural and social events held annually in Bolešov. You should also check its dates locally. This gives you two different planning considerations: the seasonal use of the reservoir and the specific date of a recurring event.
Architectural History in Bolešov
The Bolešov manor house was originally built as a Renaissance manor in the 17th century. It was remodelled in the Baroque style in the 18th century, followed by romantic alterations between 1870 and 1880. This sequence places the original construction phase and later changes in chronological order.
The parish church of Saint Andrew the Apostle was built between 1937 and 1939 to a design by architect Michal Milan Harminc and consecrated in 1939. Its main and side altars, with mosaics, date from the time of construction. The church can therefore be identified by several specific features: its role as a parish church, its architect, the years it was built, and its mosaic altars.
