A Greek Catholic church dating from 1872, the Šambriňci folklore group and Mount Siminy give Šambron concrete cultural and scenic points of interest. Visitors choosing a destination to suit their interests will find a range of things to explore here: sacred architecture, local songs and a landscape shaped by the Levočské vrchy and the Šambronka.

Church and Folklore

The Church of the Protection of the Most Holy Mother of God (Chrám Ochrany Presvätej Bohorodičky) is Greek Catholic and was built in 1872. It is a historicist building with Neo-Romanesque elements. The sacred space is single-nave, the presbytery has a polygonal end, and an integrated polygonal tower is topped with a pyramidal roof. The style and structural features describe different aspects: Historicist and Neo-Romanesque classify the building architecturally, while the nave, presbytery and tower define its specific layout.

The technical terms describe different aspects of the building: “single-nave” refers to the layout of the space; “polygonal” describes the multi-sided shape of the presbytery and tower. The pyramidal roof, in turn, is part of the tower’s design. This lets you consider the architectural style, spatial layout and roof shape separately.

Folklore is also closely tied to Šambron. The Šambriňci group has continued the local folk tradition since the FSk Skalka ceased its activities; its repertoire includes authentic songs from Šambron. The Šambriňci have performed at numerous cultural and social events in the surrounding area and further afield, as well as abroad. This brings together a local song repertoire and a performance history whose reach extends beyond the village. For those interested in culture, musical repertoire and a continuing tradition stand alongside architecture as distinct aspects of the village’s character.

Landscape and Activities

Šambron lies in the northern part of the Levočské vrchy, in the Jakubianska brázda and in the valley of the Šambronka stream. These details offer a layered sense of location: the mountain range, the Jakubianska brázda and the stream valley refer to different geographical features of the same place. Along the route Ľubovnianske kúpele–Nová Ľubovňa–Jakubany–Kolačkov–Šambron–Chmeľnica–Plaveč, Šambron lies between Kolačkov and Chmeľnica.

At around 1,280 metres, Mount Siminy is the highest point in the Levočské vrchy when approached from the Šambron side. Šambron is considered a suitable starting point for the ascent of Siminy, but no marked hiking trail leads to the summit. The approximate elevation places the mountain within the range; the lack of trail markings is just as important for your plans. Before setting out, check current access and conditions on the unmarked route.

Another natural feature in Šambron is the Smerďačky spring, which contains carbon disulfide. As a spring, it is distinct from the Šambronka stream, whose valley helps define the village’s location. Cycling is also possible in the surrounding area. The activities mentioned therefore range from climbing Siminy to cycling nearby: when planning your trip, you can choose between a specific mountain destination and activities in the surrounding area.
