Hajtovka brings together natural features along the Poprad and a history that stretches from the Middle Ages to a 19th-century church. This gives you two distinct areas to focus on when planning your trip: the landscape and its geological features, and the historical milestones of the village.

Landscape between the Poprad and the hills

Hajtovka lies above the left bank of the Poprad River. The terrain is predominantly hilly and rises northward from the riverbed. Its elevation ranges from 490 to 744 metres above sea level. The river corridor and the higher ground thus offer two distinct landscape features.

The weather is also influenced by the geographical location, elevation, and proximity to the High Tatras; sudden changes are possible. So if you plan to spend time outdoors, it is worth checking the weather forecast in advance and keeping your daily plans flexible.

Rock formations and a natural monument

A notable natural feature is the protected Skalná ihla natural monument in the Poprad floodplain, about 1.5 kilometres southwest of Hajtovka. The nearby rock formation is also known as Čertova skala. It is over ten metres high and is described as an isolated Jurassic klippe relief. River erosion is visible on it. Its height, geological formation, and the visible effects of water give the natural monument its distinctive character.

The natural monument site is accessible from Hajtovka via field paths. The Koteličné skaly, limestone formations, are also located east of the village. Nearby Opálená skala belongs to the Pieniny Klippen Belt. The three names refer to different geological features: the limestone is highlighted at Koteličné skaly, Opálená skala’s membership in a klippe belt, and Skalná ihla is described as a distinctive rock spire shaped by the river.

Church and local history

The Church of the Nativity of the Most Holy Mother of God in Hajtovka was built in 1872. It is in the traditional East Slovak Baroque-Classicist style of church architecture, and its interior dates from the time it was built. The church is in good condition and is used for its religious purpose. If you are planning a visit, check in advance whether it is possible to visit.

The history of the village predates the construction of the church. Hajtovka was founded in the second half of the 14th century under the right of pre-emption. Its oldest written mention dates from 1427, when the village was called Ayathuagasa. Its founding and its first written mention are therefore two distinct points in time. Historically, Hajtovka belonged to the Plaveč estate.

In 1456, residents of Hajtovka took part in an uprising against feudal burdens. In the past, a trade waterway ran near the village, connecting Slovak communities and towns with Poland. Agriculture and fishing historically provided the residents’ livelihoods; people in the area were known as fishermen. Together, these details show different aspects of local history: the early settlement, social conflicts and trade links, as well as former sources of income.

If you are mainly interested in natural features, Skalná ihla and the other geological sites offer specific points of interest. The church and Hajtovka’s historical milestones provide a focus on cultural history. This way, you can shape your stay around the subject you would like to explore further.
