Šarovce lies on the right bank of the Hron; the village’s history stretches from prehistoric finds to church buildings with very different construction histories. It is also home to a municipal museum and an annual cultural gathering held in May. If you are looking for a hotel for your stay, you can choose where to focus based on local history, the event date or the connection to the river.

Archaeological traces and local history

Around 3000 BC, evidence points to intensive settlement by the Baden culture in Šarovce, including numerous pottery fragments. The archaeological finds also include two bronze daggers discovered in cultural pits. During the La Tène period, from 450 BC to the beginning of the Common Era, a spacious Celtic farmstead stood in the area of today’s village. These widely separated dates give the early history of the village a long chronological span; the daggers add two specific finds with a named find context.

A later reminder of antiquity is the unveiling of a bust of Emperor Marcus Aurelius, which took place in Šarovce on 19 November 2014. Alongside the archaeological evidence, this date offers another way to explore the village’s history without conflating different periods.

Two churches, different construction histories

The Roman Catholic Church of the Holy Guardian Angels stands in Veľké Šarovce. The Neoclassical building was erected on the site of an older early Gothic church dating from the 13th century. In Malé Šarovce, the Reformed church was built in 1780 as a Toleration church without a tower, enlarged in 1832 and given a tower in 1899. The history of the church in Veľké Šarovce links a Neoclassical building with an early Gothic predecessor; the enlargement and later tower construction at the Reformed church can be distinguished chronologically.

Museum and cultural event

The Dedinské múzeum Šarovce features archaeological, ethnographic and contemporary exhibitions about the municipality. A museum visit can be arranged with Alžbeta Boháčová at 036/7792056. Visits are therefore available by appointment; arrange yours through the listed contact person.

Since 2005, Csemadok has held the cultural gathering “Turičné stretnutie” every year in May. If the date is important to your travel plans, check the specific event dates for the year you wish to visit. This lets you consider a museum visit and plans around the cultural gathering as distinct cultural highlights.

The Hron and the fishing area

The connection to the river is also clearly defined geographically: Šarovce lies on the right bank of the Hron. The VN Šarovce fishing area near Šarovce covers a water surface of 19.8 ha. It extends from the MVE Šarovce to the Tekovské Lužany–Demandice road bridge. Fishing is prohibited year-round at the functional structures of the MVE Šarovce facility. Take this restriction into account when planning your visit if fishing is part of it.

Getting there via the road network

Šarovce is connected to the national road network via road I/76. The road runs from Štúrovo via Kalná nad Hronom (Levice) to Hronský Beňadik. In the immediate vicinity of the municipality, I/76 intersects with I/75, which runs from Nové Zámky to Veľký Krtíš. Check the road numbers before setting out. The road information provides practical guidance for getting there, while the museum, churches and cultural gathering offer different reasons to choose this destination.
