On the north bank of the Ipeľ lies Hrkovce, a village whose location is clearly defined by the river and two streams. Other notable features include local history, winegrowing and annual summer festivities. Its elevation of 125 to 205 metres and a valley less than three kilometres wide between two mountain ranges give the landscape measurable contours. You can therefore get to know Hrkovce through both its setting and specific historical and cultural landmarks.

Riverbanks, Streams and Hilly Terrain

The Krupinka forms Hrkovce’s eastern boundary, the Štiavnička its western one, and the Ipeľ runs along its northern bank. Hrkovce is situated in the Ipeľská pahorkatina at 125 to 205 metres above sea level. The valley near Hrkovce is less than three kilometres wide between two mountain ranges. These details complement one another: the elevation places the village in the hilly terrain, while the valley’s width describes the landscape between the mountain ranges. If the combination of riverside setting and terrain matters to you when choosing a destination, the three waterways and elevation provide concrete points of reference.

Church and Local History

The first written record of Hrkovce dates from 1156. The Roman Catholic Church of St Catherine of Alexandria was built in 1770 and is Baroque-Classicist in style. Its history is linked to a major event in the village: on 29 July 1808, Hrkovce was almost completely destroyed by fire, but the church survived. The Chapel of the Most Holy Redeemer dates from 1900. These landmarks offer different points of connection across time, from the first written record to two religious buildings.

Winegrowing and Water

Winegrowing is evident in Hrkovce both as an economic activity and in the village’s symbolism. The agricultural cooperative cultivates 25 hectares of vineyards. A statue of Saint Urban, the patron saint of winegrowers, holding a bunch of grapes stands among the vineyards. The vineyard area indicates the scale of the agricultural activity; the statue adds a cultural touch. Water management also plays a minor role in the village and focuses on sport fishing, water protection and environmental conservation. This connection with water thus adds another local theme to the perspective on the vineyards.

Summer Festivities

Hrkovce’s summer festivities have been held annually since 1999. They include a football tournament between unmarried and married men at the local football pitch. Baňa is a natural amphitheatre among Hrkovce’s vineyards and is used for communal entertainment during the festivities. The programme therefore includes both a sporting event at the football pitch and a venue among the vineyards. If you would like to visit Hrkovce during the summer festivities, check the dates for your travel year in advance.

Getting There and Staying in the Village

Hrkovce has a railway stop on the Šahy–Zvolen line. The section of railway running through the village was built in 1899. A bus stop provides connections towards Šahy–Levice–Nitra–Bratislava and Šahy–Dudince–Zvolen–Banská Bystrica. Before travelling, check the current train and bus timetables for your specific journey.

At the entrance to the village is a recreational park with various climbing frames for children and benches. Check the condition of the facilities before your visit. Alongside the historical and landscape landmarks, a local park and transport connections are practical aspects to consider when planning your trip.
