An original potter’s house from 1880, Gothic and modern churches, and mining history give Pukanec a range of thematic highlights. The town lies at the foot of the southeastern slopes of the Štiavnické vrchy; vineyards and educational trails add landscape and nature to the picture. If you are looking for a holiday apartment in Pukanec, you can first consider whether pottery, architectural history, or mining is especially important to your travel plans.

Pottery and Local History

The Hrnčiarsky dom is an original craftsman’s house from 1880. Its rear room served as a pottery workshop. The house preserves an original pottery kiln, a potter’s wheel, tools, and ceramic pieces. The room and its furnishings give the craft a tangible historical setting.

The museum in Pukanec also includes a pottery workshop. Visitors can see how ceramics were made in the past and how they are made today, and try the potter’s wheel themselves. Confirm access locally before your arrival.

An exhibition in Pukanec covers the municipality’s earliest history and the development of mining and crafts. It also includes a historic kitchen and the interior of a burgher’s room. Its subject matter thus extends beyond pottery to local and everyday history.

Churches and Historic Buildings

The late Baroque plague column Trojičný stĺp has stood as a landmark in Pukanec’s square since 1740. It commemorates the end of cholera and honours the church and faith. The Church of St. Nicholas (Kostol svätého Mikuláša) offers a different architectural accent: it is Gothic and has two naves, with a remarkable net vault and original interior furnishings.

The Evangelical Church (Evanjelický kostol) is a notable work of modern architecture. It was built in 1935 to a design by the architect M. Zoubek. Together with the Gothic Church of St. Nicholas, it showcases the different architectural styles found in Pukanec.

The former town hall is Baroque-Classical in style. It was built between 1783 and 1786 around the older core of a mining court building. The town’s former administration is therefore also part of its architectural history.

Mining History and Educational Trails

Ergištôlňa was a former municipal gold mine. According to old maps, it was 1,100 metres long; the first written records about it date from 1583. The Po stopách starého rudného baníctva educational trail in Pukanec focuses on mining history as well as technical and natural monuments.

The Štamposký jarok educational trail covers a broader range of subjects: it is self-guided, linear, can be walked in either direction, and is open year-round. Its themes include natural history, history, technology, and mining. The trails therefore differ mainly in their focus: one is dedicated to historic ore mining, while the other combines several natural history and historical topics.

Most of Pukanec’s old mining sites are currently inaccessible. Open and backfilled shafts are dangerous; do not enter mine workings without explicit permission.

Vineyards and Landscape

Pukanec lies at the foot of the southeastern slopes of the Štiavnické vrchy. The town’s vineyards are situated at an elevation of 350 to 485 metres; the wine produced there belongs to the mountain wine category.

The educational trail about the black mulberry passes through private vineyards. Visitors are therefore advised not to leave the route. Follow local access guidance, as property ownership and trail conditions may change.
