In Veľká Tŕňa, 33 stone portals lead to historic Tokaj wine cellars. Alongside the cellars, churches from different construction periods, vineyards and hilly terrain, as well as routes in the cadastral area, offer possible focal points for a stay. You can therefore plan around architecture, viticulture or exploring the landscape.

Tokaj Wine Cellars and Heritage Protection

The Gazdovské pivnice comprise 33 stone portals leading to historic Tokaj wine cellars dating from the 15th century. This makes both the number of portals and the historical dating of the cellars tangible. Some historic wine cellars in Veľká Tŕňa date from the time of the Turkish wars, are hewn into the rock and are 8 to 16 metres deep. This depth range adds a specific architectural dimension to their historical context.

The Veľká Tŕňa heritage protection zone safeguards the heritage values of the area around the Tokaj wine cellars. These include the access network and its connection to the adjoining settlement structure of the municipality. A protection document from the regional heritage authority was issued in 2010.

Two Churches, Different Construction Periods

The Greek Catholic Church of the Most Holy Trinity was built in 1828 in the Classicist style. Its four-storey tower features string courses and pilaster framing. A Baroque onion dome sits on a disc cornice beneath the roof. String courses divide the tower horizontally, while the pilaster framing emphasises the wall surfaces vertically.

The Reformed Church stands on a gentle slope above Veľká Tŕňa, at the edge of the settlement. Its western Romanesque section includes the tower and gallery; the eastern section was rebuilt in 1936 on Gothic foundations. The western gallery is considered the church’s most valuable feature. Its location and construction phases offer different perspectives: in addition to its position at the edge of the settlement, the architecture can be viewed through its western and eastern sections.

Landscape and Routes in the Cadastral Area

Veľká Tŕňa lies in the southern part of the East Slovak Plain, at the southwestern foot of the Zemplín Mountains. Vineyards and hilly terrain surround the village. The landscape therefore brings together a plain, the edge of a mountain range and viticulture.

Several cycle routes and hiking trails for walkers pass through the cadastral area. They offer different ways to explore the surroundings. The availability and condition of routes may change; check current information before planning a trip.

Viticulture from the Village to Seven Municipalities

Local winemakers have cultivated vines for centuries on the slopes of the seven Tokaj municipalities of Čerhov, Veľká Tŕňa, Malá Tŕňa, Bara, Černochov, Viničky and Slovenské Nové Mesto. Viticulture in Veľká Tŕňa is therefore part of a regional context spanning seven municipalities. Ostrožovič is a winery in Veľká Tŕňa with a history of wine production spanning more than 30 years; its wines have won medals. This places the region’s long tradition of vine growing in context alongside the production history of a winery in the village.

Visitors to Veľká Tŕňa can taste Tokaj wine; the selection may include up to ten varieties. The specific offering may vary, so ask in advance which varieties will be available during your visit.
