Castle history, museum tours and historic churches give Trebišov a diverse cultural profile. The town also bears traces of the medieval water castle of Parič and has a 62-hectare historic park. This offers different ways to explore the town’s eras and themes, from architecture and archaeology to Tokaj wine-growing.

Castle, Museum and Tokaj Wine

The late Baroque castle in Trebišov was built in 1786 by Count Imrich Csáky and later remodelled in the Neoclassical style. Today it houses the local history museum, whose exhibitions also extend to neighbouring listed buildings.

The three museum tours focus on different subjects. The first explores the Andrássy family and Trebišov Castle, including Tokaj wine-growing. The second covers the archaeology of southern Zemplín and the treasury of the Štefan Dobó family. The third features hunting and wildlife conservation, as well as folk woodcarving, crafts and agricultural machinery.

Permanent exhibitions include Tokaj wine-growing and winemaking, with an archive of Tokaj wines; the history of agriculture in eastern Slovakia; Zemplín folk costume; and traditional crafts. Other subjects include historic tractors and combustion engines, steam and cable ploughs, the development of threshing in eastern Slovakia, and archaeological monuments in the Trebišov District. The museum also offers Tokaj wine tastings. As programme details and individual displays may change, check the latest information before your visit; you should also confirm the availability of tastings in advance.

Mausoleum and Churches

The mausoleum of Count Július Andrássy was built in 1893 in the Neo-Gothic style, based on a design by German architect Arthur Meining. Inside is a sarcophagus by Budapest sculptor Juraj Zala, created between 1893 and 1895. Andrássy has been buried there since 1894.

The Greek Catholic Church of the Dormition of the Mother of God was built from 1818 to 1825 and consecrated on 28 August 1825, the Feast of the Dormition of the Mother of God. Its interior restoration was completed in 1886. A carved iconostasis and pulpit by woodcarver Peter Kovaliczky were added at that time; the prominent icon depicts the Dormition of the Virgin Mary.

The Roman Catholic Church of the Visitation of the Virgin Mary dates back to an original building erected before 1404 and is a Gothic architectural monument. Its net vault comprises 63 bays. Inside are eight compositions depicting the life of the Virgin Mary and twelve paintings from the legendary life of Saint Paul the Hermit. Two monumental Rococo paintings date from 1777.

Parič and the Historic Park

The first construction phase of the early Gothic lowland water castle of Parič is dated to the 12th or 13th century; its polygonal stone fortification was built in the early 14th century. The complex included an early Gothic palace, an entrance tower and a stone-lined well in the castle courtyard. Polish groschen and Hungarian silver coins found at Parič attest to transit trade with Poland between the 15th and 17th centuries.

The two-storey Pauline monastery is also part of Trebišov’s history: it was built in 1502 at the behest of Palatine Imrich of the Perényi family. The historic town park, meanwhile, was landscaped in connection with the construction of the castle; its development began in the last third of the 18th century. The park grew from an original floodplain forest and contains historic and naturally established coniferous and deciduous trees, shrubs and other plants.

The Bučov les health area lies in Trebišov’s forest park and serves residents and visitors as part of cycling tourism. The town’s cultural profile therefore encompasses not only its castle, churches and museum, but also its park history and connection to cycling tourism.
