Markušovce can be explored through several clearly distinct historical layers. The church’s history dates back to the Middle Ages; Markušovský hrad is a partially preserved, roofed ruin. Kaštieľ Markušovce manor house and Letohrádok Dardanely reflect building phases from the 17th and 18th centuries. There are also museum exhibitions, a terraced park and hiking opportunities in Markušovská dolina. This gives you cultural history and hiking as distinct options to consider when planning your stay.

Church and castle: two early landmarks

The church “Kostol sv. Michala archanjela” is first mentioned in 1280 and was originally Late Romanesque. Today, its interior is predominantly Baroque. Tombstones of the Mariássy family from the 16th and 17th centuries add to its furnishings; they are made of red marble. The building brings together several distinct historical details: its early mention, its original Late Romanesque classification and its Baroque interior with older tombs. The year 1280 refers to the church’s first mention, not its construction date.

Two dates mark different events in the history of Markušovský hrad: the castle was built in 1284 and destroyed in 1527. Its partially preserved and roofed ruin is located right in the municipality of Markušovce. Public access conditions may vary. If you plan to visit the ruin, check the current visiting options in advance.

Manor house and Letohrádok: different building phases

At Kaštieľ Markušovce manor house, it is worth distinguishing between its construction and its present appearance. František Máriássy had it built in the Renaissance style in 1643; its present form dates to a Rococo renovation carried out between 1772 and 1780. Letohrádok Dardanely, by contrast, was built in 1777–1778. The two periods are close together, but describe different buildings and events: a renovation in one case and a construction in the other. This makes it possible to distinguish the building histories of the manor house and the Letohrádok.

Museum exhibitions and concerts

The manor house hosts a museum exhibition on the development and different forms of furniture and interior design, arranged chronologically from the 17th century to the beginning of the 20th century. Letohrádok Dardanely houses an exhibition of historical keyboard instruments. This lets you distinguish between a chronological presentation of domestic culture and an exhibition devoted to historical instruments.

The manor house and Letohrádok Dardanely together form an outpost of the Spiš Museum in Spišská Nová Ves. The address for both is Michalská 59, 053 21 Markušovce. Festive concerts are occasionally held at the Letohrádok; specific programmes may vary. If a concert is important to your travel dates, check whether an event is scheduled on the days you want to visit.

Terraced park and hiking opportunities

The French Park in Markušovce is divided into three terraces connected by a stone staircase. Its tiered layout adds a distinct landscape feature alongside the historic buildings and exhibitions. The Markušovská dolina valley offers another focus, with opportunities for hiking. If you want to include physical activity alongside culture when choosing places to visit, you can plan this hiking option as a separate part of your trip.
