Blatná Polianka combines a long history as a settlement with a wetland of importance to migratory and water birds. The Senianske rybníky National Nature Reserve includes the municipality’s cadastral area; at the same time, Blatná Polianka is one of the cadastral areas of the bird protection area of the same name. Nature observation and local history therefore offer two distinct focal points for a stay. When looking for a hotel, you can use these themes as a guide: what matters is whether ponds, birdlife and local history suit your travel plans.
Wetlands and Birdlife
The Senianske rybníky Bird Protection Area lies near Blatná Polianka and is part of the Natura 2000 network. The National Nature Reserve protects rare aquatic communities and water birds. It lies on an important migration route for waterbirds and waders and serves as a resting area for them. In Slovakia, the bird protection area is one of the three most important breeding grounds for purple herons, little egrets, great egrets, spoonbills, black-crowned night herons, great bitterns, marsh harriers, whiskered terns and pied avocets. A total of 295 bird species have been recorded in the protected area and its wider surroundings; breeding has been confirmed for 125 species. These figures may change as future surveys are conducted.
The Senné Fish-ponds wetland, which includes Blatná Polianka among its cadastral areas, also lies on an important migration route for water birds. It comprises seasonally flooded grasslands, shrub swamps and 28 fishponds. Different wetland features are therefore in focus: seasonally flooded areas and swamps on the one hand, ponds and birdlife on the other.
Nature Trail and Wildlife Watching
The Náučný chodník Vtáčím rajom nature trail is accessible from Blatná Polianka. There are observation towers along the trail for viewing the landscape and birds. The route is designated as an easy, 15-kilometre trail open year-round; conditions may vary by season. Check trail conditions before your visit if you plan to follow it at a particular time of year. Recreational fishing is also listed as an activity in the Senianske rybníky area.
Traces of Local History
Archaeological remains from the 9th to 11th centuries have been found in the Blatná Polianka area. They predate the municipality’s first written mention, which dates to 1417. A later milestone in local history is the Reformed church, built in 1906 and restored in 1931. Agriculture, and fishing in particular, also historically shaped the population’s livelihood. This tradition is reflected in the two fish on the municipal coat of arms.
