Those who appreciate nature watching, distinctive bodies of water and museums will find a variety of travel experiences in Sobrance District. These include an important wetland, protected woodland habitats, hiking trails, border history and regional wine traditions. When planning your stay, it is worth deciding first whether nature or culture will be the main focus.
Wetlands and protected habitats
Senianske rybníky is a wetland of great importance for biodiversity and numerous endangered plant and animal species. A total of 283 bird species have been recorded there; future surveys may change this figure. This makes the diversity of habitats a focus alongside the birdlife.
The nature reserves have distinct ecological characteristics. PR Lysá in Podhoroď and Choňkovce protects rare forest and forest-steppe communities, as well as an isolated occurrence of the many-flowered oak (Quercus polycarpa). In Remetské Hámre, PR Lysák preserves thermophilous beech-oak communities featuring the many-flowered oak and Dalechamp's oak (Quercus dalechampii) at an elevation of 821 m. PR Machnatý vrch in Vyšná Rybnica, meanwhile, protects rare moss communities in acidic beech forests, including the endangered pipsissewa (Chimaphila umbellata).
PR Drieň in Hlivištia also has its own distinctive habitat: the reserve preserves forest and forest-steppe communities on andesite bedrock, with abundant cornelian cherry (Cornus mas). The Beňatinský travertín natural monument is a geological highlight and the easternmost travertine outcrop in Slovakia. Travertine formation continues there to this day.
Lakes, trails and specific routes
Morské oko is a 13 ha impounded volcanic lake at an elevation of 618 m. Malé Morské oko has a water surface of 0.33 ha and a depth of 2.4 to 4 m; it has no surface outflow. These details offer two different insights into the region's bodies of water.
There are hiking routes of markedly different lengths: the Vtáčím rajom nature trail in Sobrance District is 16 km long and has five observation towers. The Morské oko–Sninský kameň section of the trail is 4 km long and climbs from 618 to 1,005 m above sea level. These details help you take the route length into account when planning a day out.
On the shore of Morské oko stands Kaštielik Morské oko, built in 1924 as a place for relaxation. A blue-marked hiking trail about 800 m long leads there from a car park. As access information can change, it is advisable to check it before visiting.
Museums of instruments and border history
The Gitarové múzeum in Sobrance features an exhibition with hundreds of guitars and thousands of historical objects. On guided, interactive tours, visitors can try many of the instruments on display for themselves. If you plan to visit this museum, check the current programme details in advance.
The Múzeum Na čiare in Lekárovce explores life on the Slovak-Ukrainian border and the history of smuggling and human trafficking. The basic exhibition area is open to the public, but visits must be arranged by phone. A guided tour lasts about 1 hour and 20 minutes; here too, it is advisable to arrange a time before visiting.
Bathing history and wine traditions
Sobranecké kúpele is among the oldest spa resorts in Slovakia. Its mineral springs are mentioned in documents dating back to 1336. Five cold springs rise there; their water is slightly carbonated, contains hydrogen sulphide, is moderately mineralised and is of the sodium chloride type. The springs give the region's spa history a specific historical and hydrogeological context.
Wine is also part of the region's history: the Sobranecký wine-growing region has a long tradition of winemaking. In nearby Orechová, the company REGIA TT, s. r. o., produces high-quality varietal and vintage wines that have won awards at various wine exhibitions.
Choose accommodation to suit your travel plans
When choosing a base for your stay, it helps to decide on a clear focus: nature watching and nature trails offer a different kind of experience from museum visits or the region's historical and culinary attractions.
