The southeastern slopes of the Slovak Ore Mountains form the scenic backdrop to Vyšný Medzev. At the same time, the town’s history can be traced through specific themes: mining and metalworking were traditional sources of livelihood, and hiking trails lead to viewpoints and mining remnants. This offers two perspectives for planning a trip: the town’s established settlement pattern and the natural and mining history along the trails.

Landscape and townscape

The southern section of the Vyšný Medzev valley has the character of a deep gorge. In the forested area, the landscape is shaped by clearly defined, wooded mountain terrain and streams with abundant water in the individual valleys. This gives the town a clear connection to its surrounding mountain landscape, while the conservation area also preserves the historic settlement pattern.

Both the natural and settlement patterns are largely preserved there. In the center, rows of townhouses shape the streetscape; in the rural surroundings, the rows of buildings are more loosely arranged. The contrast between the more compact town center and the looser development around it is one of the defining features of the conservation area.

Mining history and historic buildings

The first written mention of the two settlement areas of Medzev—Vyšný Medzev and Nižný Medzev—dates from 1427. Mining and metalworking were traditional sources of livelihood. Under Emperor Leopold I, Vyšný Medzev was granted the status of a free royal privileged mining town. This history is reflected in the town’s historic features and technical monuments.

The town hall was built in the early Baroque style in the 17th century and enlarged and remodeled in the 18th century. The Roman Catholic Baroque Church of St. Mary Magdalene dates from 1773; its altar was originally in Jasov Monastery. The two buildings point to different stages in the town’s history: the town hall to its architectural history, and the church to a prominent 18th-century religious building.

Antlov hámor is a technical monument: a single-room, rectangular building dating from the second half of the 19th century. Lucia Baňa is also part of the municipality of Vyšný Medzev. The former mining settlement adds to the picture of local mining history; it is home to a wooden skittle alley in the Secessionist style, dating from the early 20th century. Thus, the cultural picture encompasses not only townhouses and the church, but also technical and other architectural heritage.

Hiking trails and destinations

A yellow-marked hiking trail passes through Vyšný Medzev and continues along Gelnická cesta and Staré Košiare to Trohanka–Tri studne. A red-marked ridge route in the Volovské vrchy runs along the northern ridge of the forested area of Vyšný Medzev. It leads east to Kojšovská hoľa; west, it passes Zbojnícka skala to the Kloptaň viewpoint summit and continues to Jedľovec. These destinations illustrate the different directions taken by the routes.

The eight-kilometer educational trail through the Humelská Valley starts in the village square, at an information board with a description of the town’s history and a map of the route. At Múr, it includes a viewpoint; between two water basins, it leads to a reconstruction of a medieval smelting furnace. The educational trail also leads to a medieval mine. There, you can view the adit, which was hewn by hand into the rock, through a barred entrance, but you cannot enter it. The trail is considered easy and suitable for less fit or older hikers, too.

Trail conditions and signage may change. Access to the viewpoint and the condition of the reconstructed structure may also depend on local conditions. Check the latest information before setting out. Turistická útulňa Jána Kruteka is located at an elevation of 842 meters in the Kloptáň area and can be reached from Vyšný Medzev. According to regional tourism information, it is open year-round and free to use; operating conditions may change. Check that it is currently accessible before your trip.
