A 2.2-kilometre astronomy educational trail and marked hiking routes give Vyšný Klátov a distinct character as an outdoor destination. At the same time, the church, minimuseum and local history tell different sides of the place.
Landscape and Location
Vyšný Klátov lies at the transition between the northwestern part of the Košická kotlina and the Slovenské rudohorie, in the headwaters of the Myslavský potok stream. The village is also in the Volovské vrchy mountain range, which belongs to the Slovenské rudohorie uplands. The cadastral area includes part of the Volovské vrchy Special Protection Area. Thus, the geographical description brings together the village, its mountain landscape and a protected-area section within the cadastral area.
At 947 metres, Predné Holisko is the highest peak in the cadastral area of Vyšný Klátov. This elevation provides a specific point of reference for the landscape around the village.
Hiking and Cycling Destinations
A blue-marked hiking route starts in Vyšný Klátov and leads to the nearby Jahodná sports and recreation centre. A yellow-marked route also starts in the village, leads to the Lajoška mountain chalet and continues to Železný vrch at 817.5 metres. The chalet is in the vicinity of Vyšný Klátov, below the Predná Holica peak, at an elevation of 908 metres. The routes therefore differ in their markings and in the destinations specified.
A blue-marked cycling route also passes through Vyšný Klátov. Trail markings and conditions are relevant when planning your rides; check them before setting out, as signs and conditions can change.
Meteorite Educational Trail
The Klátovské meteority educational trail starts in Vyšný Klátov and is dedicated to astronomy. It is associated with the meteorite fall on 28 February 2010 in the municipality’s territory. The 2.2-kilometre trail has an elevation difference of 60 metres. It is self-guided, linear, walkable in both directions and open year-round. This sets it apart from the hiking routes described by their colour markings and destinations: here, the focus is on a specific topic and a defined trail format.
There are four information panels for the trail in the village; individual panels may be relocated. Maintenance and access conditions can change, so it is advisable to check the latest trail conditions before setting out.
Church, Museum and Local History
The Church of the Holy Trinity was built in 1869 on the site of an older church. Its tower was preserved and incorporated into the new building. The furnishings include historicist Art Nouveau altars from the first half of the 20th century. The building and altars thus reflect different periods in the history of the church and art.
The Minimuseum of Folk Culture was established in 2001 in a former village smithy. Its collection includes historic furniture, household and agricultural objects, homemade traditional costumes and embroidery. As visiting arrangements may change, check in advance if you are planning a visit.
The village’s earlier history is also closely connected with work involving mineral resources. Vyšný Klátov was a German colony from 1317 to 1773; this period was associated with mineral exploration and the mining and processing of iron ore. The church, museum and mining history thus offer different cultural and historical perspectives for learning about the place.

For 2024, the municipality’s annual report lists Eurobus Košice as the operator of the bus service to Vyšný Klátov. Check the current timetable before travelling.
