Gothic and Baroque architectural monuments and sacred routes give Marianka a distinct character: here, pilgrimage history can be combined with a stay in a wooded landscape. The town is considered Slovakia’s oldest pilgrimage site and was the first Marian pilgrimage site in the former Kingdom of Hungary. These two classifications refer to different areas: one to Slovakia, the other to the former Kingdom of Hungary. The pilgrimage site lies in a forested setting in the Little Carpathians. Visitors wishing to focus their trip on culture and hiking will find two clear themes in Marianka.

Pilgrimage History and Architecture

The Church of the Nativity of the Virgin Mary is originally Gothic and retains its Gothic structure. Most of the architectural monuments in the Marian Valley, by contrast, date from the Baroque period. Marianka thus combines a Gothic church building with a collection of monuments that is predominantly Baroque in character. The Marian Way was created in the early 18th century between the church and the Chapel of the Miraculous Spring. Six accompanying chapels were built along the route, dedicated to events in the life of the Virgin Mary and her feast days.

The Rotunda Chapel of the Holy Spring is also one of the distinctive sacred buildings: it was built over a miraculous spring in 1696. The Stations of the Cross comprise 14 stations, including 13 chapels, and fifty life-size statues. Together, these represent different forms of religious heritage: a historic church building, an early route with its associated chapels, and a Stations of the Cross with stations and figures.

The Stations of the Cross lie in a wooded landscape on a slope above the Lourdes Grotto, on the left bank of the Mariánsky potok. The stream was formerly known as Kláštorný potok. The Lourdes Grotto was built in the first half of the 20th century. The eastern part of Marianka’s monument zone is part of the Malé Karpaty Protected Landscape Area. These details add the surrounding landscape that shapes the town to its architectural history.

Pilgrimage and Slate Mining

The Marian pilgrimage on the Feast of the Nativity of the Virgin Mary, on September 8, is Marianka’s most important annual event. If you would like to plan your stay around this date, check the current programme before you travel.

The mini-exhibition on slate mining in the Marian Valley, next to the third Marian Chapel, explores a different subject. It is considered Slovakia’s smallest mining exhibition. Photographic and documentary materials, accompanied by expert explanations, provide an overview of the history of slate extraction and processing. The preserved slate mine has three chambers, but is not open to the public. Before visiting, check the exhibition’s current visitor arrangements, as published arrangements may change.

Hiking Trails from Marianka

The signposted “Na Pajštún” circular trail starts at the SAD bus stop above the monastery grounds. From Marianka, it runs via Borinka, Pajštún, Pod Kozliskom, Dračí hrádok, Svätý vrch and Klčovanice, before returning to Marianka. The route is therefore described as a circular trail passing through several named points. For planning purposes, it is a different kind of outing from the walking route from Marianka to Rača, which runs via Malý Slavín, Pánova lúka and Malá Baňa and is about 10 km long. Check the current route and trail markings before setting out, as trail conditions and markings may change.

The two routes offer different points of reference for planning your day: “Na Pajštún” returns to Marianka, while the roughly 10 km walking route names Rača as its destination. Together with the chapel routes and the Stations of the Cross, they offer a choice between the town’s sacred history and longer hikes. If you are considering Marianka as a travel destination, these different focuses can help you decide how to divide your time between architecture, pilgrimage and the landscape.
