Vieska Nad Blhom combines its location on the Blh River with a local history reflected in bells, tombs and memorial plaques. The village lies in the middle of the Rimava Basin, on the Blh floodplain. The municipal area also includes a deforested plain and hilly terrain with pronounced terraces. This gives you two different perspectives to consider when planning your trip: the shapes of the landscape and its historical memorials. If you are looking for a holiday apartment, these themes can help you decide whether the character of the place suits your interests.

Floodplain Location and Terraces in the Rimava Basin

The geographical setting ranges from the river floodplain to the landscape features of the municipal area. In addition to the plain and hilly terrain, pronounced terraces shape its description. The underlying geology is also varied: it consists of marl, claystone and sandstone, partly covered by river deposits and loess loam. In Vieska Nad Blhom, the location on the Blh and the structure of the surrounding municipal area are therefore both central. For travellers who want to consider landscape features as well as local history when choosing a destination, this combination offers a specific point of reference.

Local History and Bells

The first written mention of Vieska Nad Blhom dates back to 1427, when the village was named Wyfalu. This year is an early reference point in the local history. Later memorials focus on other themes, including personal dedications and remembrance of those who fell in war.

A bell dating from 1894 is housed in the tower of the Reformed Church in Balogújfalu. Its inscription reads, in essence: “I call the living to prayer, announce the danger of fire and mourn the dead – UJFALU 1894.” The three functions mentioned offer an insight into the significance associated with the bell according to its inscription: prayer, warning and mourning. This is a different historical reference from a personal dedication.

Another bell was cast in 1933. It commemorates Bodon Dénesné Balyó Ilonka, who died on 2 June 1907, and Bodon Gyula, who died on 2 September 1921. The bell founder was Egry Ferenc; the bell was commissioned by Dóri Balyó József and his wife, Balyó Rozália. Bodon Gyula is also remembered by a tomb. He lived from 1906 to 1921 and died at the age of 15. The bell tradition and the tomb thus link different forms of remembrance of him.

Tombs, Memorial Plaques and Events

A tomb belonging to the Dóri Balyo family and Bodon Gyula is located in a cemetery in Vieska Nad Blhom. The Jewish burial site “Balogújfalusi zsidó sír” is also part of the local landscape of remembrance. These sites stand alongside the memorial plaques commemorating those who fell in the two world wars. A plaque commemorating those who fell in the First World War is located in the Reformed Church; it dates from the 1930s. A second plaque commemorating those who fell in the Second World War was installed in 2004 by the local Reformed association together with the municipal office of Vieska Nad Blhom. The plaques therefore differ both in the occasion they commemorate and in the time they were created.

Social and cultural events are also part of village life. They are held at the cultural centre and outdoors. If you want to plan your trip around a particular event, check the specific dates before making arrangements.

The themes mentioned offer you different ways to understand Vieska Nad Blhom: through its floodplain and terraced landscape, its early local history, or its personal and communal forms of remembrance. You can then decide which of these perspectives matters most for your stay.
