Kraskovo lies in the southeastern part of the Slovak Ore Mountains, on a flat ridge between the Rimava Valley and the Blh Valley. The ridge and valleys give the settlement a clearly defined landscape. The remnant surface of the highland plateau near Kraskovo is predominantly deforested and consists of andesite pyroclastics. The valleys and highland plateau describe different aspects of the landscape: its geographical setting and the character of its surface. If you want to combine culture and landscape when planning a trip, you can consider this location alongside the Gothic Evangelical church and its medieval furnishings.
Landscape and route connections
The Gotická cesta (Gothic Route) leads to Kraskovo in a southeasterly direction. It is a point of reference independent of the terrain: the ridge and valleys describe the landscape, while the route indicates a direction towards Kraskovo. These clues can be considered separately when getting your bearings in the destination. Thus, alongside the highland plateau and the valleys, the description of the settlement also includes a named route and its orientation as distinct aspects.
Gothic church and historical traces
The Gothic Evangelical church was built on the site of an older structure and fortified with a wall in the 15th century. The fortified church complex includes a wooden bell tower dating from 1657. Inside, 14th-century frescoes survive on the surfaces of the presbytery, the triumphal arch and the northern nave wall. The complete Legend of Saint Ladislaus is also located on the north wall. The church also contains a medieval stone baptismal font from the 13th century. The paintings cover several areas of the church interior, while the baptismal font is a single dated item of church furnishing.
The dates can be read alongside one another: the baptismal font dates from the 13th century, the frescoes from the 14th century, the fortification from the 15th century, and the tower from 1657. This chronology relates to individual parts of the church complex and offers a concrete perspective on its different historical layers.
Planning a church visit
You must arrange access to the church interior in advance by phone with the guide Ilčík at 0910 968 068. Plan to make this call before your visit. This is especially important if the frescoes, the Legend of Saint Ladislaus or the baptismal font are among your priorities.
Crafts and historical rights
The history of the settlement also includes aspects beyond the church building. Historical crafts in Kraskovo included making wooden tableware and tools. This offers a different perspective from the frescoes and baptismal font: the focus here is on making everyday objects, while there it is on sacred furnishings. Historically, Kraskovo held the right to hold a fair on the feast day of Saint Ladislaus, its patron saint. The name Ladislaus thus links the complete legend on the north wall with a historical right of the settlement. Art, crafts and the right to hold a fair offer different ways to explore the history of the settlement.
When choosing your trip, two distinct interests come into focus: the location on the predominantly deforested highland plateau and the church’s architectural and furnishing history. If the church interior is your main interest, include the required phone arrangement in your plans.
