Hodejovec lies among the hills of the Cerová vrchovina. Almost the entire cadastral area is part of a protected landscape area; in the village, the church dedicated to Saint Martin the Bishop is a prominent historical landmark. A section of a 24-kilometre hiking trail also passes through Hodejovec. When planning, it is worth distinguishing this section in the village from the entire trail.

Landscape and Protected Areas

Almost the entire cadastral area of Hodejovec lies within the Cerová vrchovina Protected Landscape Area. The village is also part of the Cerová vrchovina a Rimavská kotlina Natura 2000 site. The Cerová vrchovina – lesné biotopy area (SKUEV0357) also includes the cadastral area. It is a European Site of Community Importance for forest habitats and covers an area of 2,626.48 hectares. This area figure refers to the protected site, not to Hodejovec alone.

The terrain includes Tertiary sandstones. In the southwest, erosion has exposed remnants of lava flows; oak woodland remnants and acacia stands are found mainly there. Agricultural crops are grown across most of the cadastral area. Hills, geological formations, woodland remnants and cultivated land offer different perspectives on the local landscape. The protected-area designations and information about woodland and agriculture help place Hodejovec in its wider landscape context, beyond its individual attraction.

Church and Local History

The first written mention of Hodejovec dates from 1427, when the village was called Keregede. For many years, Hodejovec belonged to the Hajnáčka estate. The village’s dominant landmark is the Roman Catholic Church of Saint Martin the Bishop. Originally built as a Baroque church in 1737, it was remodelled in the Classicist style in 1836. The tower was also raised during renovations in 1927.

The building has a single nave and a straight-ended altar. The presbytery is covered by a Bohemian vault; the façade has been renovated and is two-toned. Its history therefore spans its Baroque origins, the Classicist remodelling and later renovations. The church is in very good condition and serves its religious purpose. If you would like to see the interior, check access in advance.

Hiking and Nature Interests

The 24-kilometre hiking trail from Hodejov railway station to Hajnáčka railway station runs for 1.81 kilometres through Hodejovec. This figure describes the section within the cadastral area, not the entire hike. If you are planning the full route, take its total length into account. Route information may be updated; check the route locally before setting out.

The area is also considered interesting for mushroom picking. This seasonal nature activity adds another possible reason to visit alongside the landscape and hiking, without being tied to a particular route.

Plan a Stay That Suits You

When looking for a holiday apartment in Hodejovec, you can start by considering what you want your stay to focus on: the church’s history and architecture, the landscape, or the section of a longer hike that passes through the village. For hiking plans, it is important to distinguish between the 1.81-kilometre section and the 24-kilometre overall route. If you would also like to visit the church, check access in advance.
