Two churches, connections to Samo Tomášik, and marked hiking and cycling routes offer practical starting points for a stay in Chyžné. You can choose to explore art and local history or spend time outdoors. If you are looking for a holiday apartment, these themes can help you decide what you would like to focus on during your trip.

Church Art from Different Periods

The Roman Catholic Church of the Annunciation of the Virgin Mary in Chyžné is a national cultural monument dating from the second half of the 13th century. Medieval wall paintings from the second half of the 14th century have been preserved in the presbytery. There is also a late Gothic winged altar from 1508, from the workshop of Master Paul of Levoča. When its wings are open, the altar depicts the Visitation, the Nativity of Christ, the Adoration of the Three Wise Men, and Saint George. When viewing the altar, you can therefore take in specific images as well as its date. You can enquire about admission through the parish office in Jelšava; arrange your visit there in advance.

The Evangelical Church in Chyžné was completed and consecrated on 6 November 1786. It contains a portico-type altar dating from around 1800. The altarpiece depicts the Transfiguration of Christ; the church also has a painting of the Last Supper, considered its most valuable painting. Compared with the Church of the Annunciation, the subjects highlighted in the artworks also differ: medieval wall paintings and the late Gothic winged altar have been preserved there, while here the focus is on the altarpiece and the painting of the Last Supper.

Samo Tomášik and Local History

The Samo Tomášik Memorial Room opened on 5 September 1997 as a permanent exhibition of historical archival documents and objects. It provides information about the history of Chyžné and the life and work of Samo Tomášik. His historical connection to the village is also evident in the parish house beside the Evangelical Church, where Tomášik lived and worked. His grave and gravestone are in the local cemetery.

Another historical perspective is Chyžné’s mining and ironworking past. It is reflected in place names such as Banský vŕšok, Hutné, and Klinčiareň. These names add another topic in local history to the church and Tomášik connections.

Getting to Know the Hiking and Cycling Routes

The Chyžné–Dlhý diel–Chyžné circular hiking trail is 17.2 kilometres long, marked in green, and listed as taking 4 hours and 50 minutes. For cyclists, Route 5607 connects Ochtinská aragonitová jaskyňa, Jelšava, and Chyžné over 13 kilometres. The two routes can be distinguished by mode of travel and destination; the stated duration of the circular trail also offers a useful point of reference for planning your time.

The Chyžné–Malý Kohút mountain bike route starts in Chyžné. A turnoff on this route leads to the Klepaná skala rock viewpoint, where there is a shelter and a cross. If you are comparing cycling options, this route has a specifically named starting point in the village and a turnoff to a viewpoint; Route 5607, by contrast, connects the three named places over 13 kilometres. Check local route details before setting out. Markings and conditions on Route 5607 may change; conditions and the state of the shelter on the mountain bike route may also change.
