In Muránska Zdychava, hiking trails can be combined with a special look at the local folk architecture. Two routes offer a concrete comparison for planning: 6.0 kilometres from Muránska Huta and 21 kilometres from Červená Skala. The dispersed settlement pattern and preserved wooden houses, especially in Kokavka, also shape the character of the place.

Hiking: two route lengths and starting points

The green-marked Červená Skala–Muránska Zdychava route is numbered 5739, is 21 kilometres long and is maintained by KST. On its way to Muránska Zdychava, it passes through Strateník, Šumiacka priehyba, Severná lúka, Chata Janka and Horáreň Karafová. This makes it possible to assess the route by its length and the named intermediate points.

The Muránska Huta–Muránska Zdychava route offers a shorter distance: it reaches Muránska Zdychava at its endpoint after 6.0 kilometres. It is numbered 2869 and is also maintained by KST. Comparing the 6.0 and 21 kilometres can help you weigh up the scope of your hiking plans, without inferring the difficulty level from the distance.

Connections to the national park

Muránska Zdychava is a junction for trails connected to access points to the national park’s main area near Predná Hora. For orientation, distinguish this connection from the route described via intermediate points: the Červená Skala–Muránska Zdychava route passes through the specifically named locations, while the trails at the village connect to the access points near Predná Hora.

The wider regional connection is also evident in the Rudná magistrála. This hiking trail in central Slovakia connects Zlaté Moravce, Banská Štiavnica and Detva with the area of Muránska planina National Park and ends at Mount Stolica. This lets you place the trails around Muránska Zdychava in a broader hiking context without treating the different routes as one and the same.

Dispersed settlement and wooden houses

A characteristic feature of Muránska Zdychava is the dispersed settlement pattern typical of Kopaničiarska settlements. The focus is therefore not only on individual buildings, but also on the distinctive settlement pattern as a whole. Several original wooden houses have been preserved, especially in the locality of Kokavka. They offer a concrete point of interest if you are interested in traditional architecture as well as hiking.

The history of the place can also be framed by clear dates: the settlement’s origins are connected with Wallachian colonisation. The name Muránska Zdychava first appears in written sources in 1611. Both provide a historical context for a visit, without equating the name’s earliest mention with the settlement’s origins.

Ľudový dom and Zdychavské skalky

A 2022 regional strategy describes Ľudový dom as a well-maintained wooden house open to visitors and tourists interested in the folk architecture of the Middle Gemer region. It also describes an exhibition featuring original traditional interior furnishings. Check access information separately before your visit.

The municipality’s territory also includes Zdychavské skalky: this protected area lies within the cadastral territory of Muránska Zdychava and covers 25,400 square metres. The area figure gives a tangible sense of the extent of this specific protected area. Muránska Zdychava thus brings together different points of interest: named hiking routes, a distinctive settlement pattern, historical connections and a protected area.
