Šumiac combines a strong bell-making tradition with cultural sites in the village and routes to Kráľova hoľa. When choosing where to stay, you can focus on one of two themes: the history and culture of Šumiac, or activities that start here. There are various options for hiking, winter sports and cycling; cycling routes are listed with specific distances, elevation gains and difficulty ratings.

Hiking, cycling and winter sports

A blue-marked hiking trail leads from Šumiac to Kráľova hoľa. The mountain area is also designated for ski touring: Kráľova hoľa is a ski-touring area approved by the NAPANT administration. In winter, Chamkova stodola can be reached via a groomed cross-country ski trail through snow-covered meadows. Another cross-country skiing option is the 6.2-kilometre groomed route from Šumiac to Predné sedlo below Kráľova hoľa. Conditions on these winter routes may vary; check them before setting out.

Cycling loops also let you choose the distance that suits you. The easy “Cyklookruh Šumiac – Vaľkovňa – Zlatno” starts in Šumiac, is 20 kilometres long and has 210 metres of elevation gain. The “Šumiacky okruh cez Besník” also starts in the village, but at 36 kilometres and 1,130 metres of elevation gain, it is considerably longer and rated difficult. This comparison gives you a concrete guide to choosing a route without combining the two trails into one. Conditions may vary depending on the season; check the individual route before setting out.

As a complement to these activities, Lesná sauna Šumiac offers a traditional dry sauna and a natural cool-down in a nearby mountain stream. It is intended for small groups or a stay for two.

Bell-making and village culture

The Múzeum zvoncov a spiežovcov is Mikuláš Gigac’s private collection at Bučinka 23 in Šumiac. Its name refers to bells and cowbells; the history of bell-making provides a connection to the craft. Bell-making was associated with sheep and cattle farming and developed especially during the 18th and 19th centuries. This domestic craft was therefore closely connected with the agricultural way of life, though it was not limited to Šumiac alone.

Šumiacka izba presents traditional culture from Šumiac. It is located beside the primary school on the village square. The first section features a room and a kitchen furnished in the style of former homes in the village. These include a traditional “špohret.” Visits to Šumiacka izba must be arranged by phone in advance; confirm the current visiting arrangements by telephone beforehand.

Another glimpse into local history is offered by the Greek Catholic Church of the Ascension of the Lord. The Baroque-Classical church was built in 1775 on the site of an older wooden building dating from 1643 and renovated between 1898 and 1901. Its three-tier iconostasis dates from 1909. Chamkova stodola also represents the region’s history: it is a remnant of the traditional dual economic system of Šumiac’s ancestors.

Events and folklore

The celebrations marking the sovereignty of the Slovak Republic have been held in Šumiac since 1992 and end with a bonfire being lit on Úboč. In winter, music and folklore come together in the Greek Catholic Church at “Vianoce pod Kráľovou hoľou,” also known as “Kračun pod Kráľovou hoľou.” The FS Šumiačan folklore group performs Christmas and church songs there in Old Church Slavonic and Slovak. Choirs and ensembles from across Slovakia also take part every year.

The two folklore ensembles, FS Šumiačan and Šumiačaník, have been active in Šumiac for more than 50 years. Together with the exhibition of traditional culture and the bell collection, they give the village a strong cultural focus. This lets you weigh up mountain excursions and insights into local history when planning your stay, rather than forcing both interests into a fixed programme.
