Dolná Lehota lies in the valley of the Vajskovský stream; the municipality is situated in the buffer zone of the Low Tatras National Park. Hiking destinations, mountain nature and traces of local history offer several possible ways to shape your trip.

Skalka: Nature Across Altitudinal Zones

The Skalka National Nature Reserve covers 2,659.81 hectares and was established in 1997. Its habitats range from the montane to the alpine zone. Alpine plant communities can be found in the summit areas at 1,980 metres. The reserve lies partly within the cadastral areas of Jasenie and Dolná Lehota, so its boundaries do not coincide with those of the municipality.

Tatra chamois, marmots, brown bears, lynxes and red deer occur in the Skalka area. Together with its different altitudinal zones, they make nature an important theme in Dolná Lehota and its surroundings. If you choose the region for its landscape, you can consider this protected area as one focus alongside the trails in the Vajskovský Valley.

Hiking Trails and the Vajskovský Waterfall

An approximately two-kilometre hiking trail leads from Pálenica to the Vajskovský Waterfall. It plunges nine metres over a rugged rock face; the waterfall lies at an elevation of about 1,200 metres. Both the Vajskovská dolina nature trail and the green-marked hiking trail end there. Access conditions may vary seasonally, so it is advisable to check them before your visit.

At its first information point at Dve vody, the nature trail already introduces topics from mining history, particularly antimony mining in the area. It also recalls the avalanche in the nearby Kulichova dolina. Another trail, Medveďou cestičkou, covers historical, mining, Pro Silva, forestry and hunting topics. It can be reached via turnoffs from the main Dolná Lehota–Krpačovo and Krpačovo–Tále roads. The two nature trails therefore offer different thematic perspectives: one combines mining history with remembrance, while the other explores a broader range of forest and regional history.

Krpačovo: Activities in Different Seasons

Part of the Krpačovo recreation centre lies within the municipality of Dolná Lehota. Swimming and boating are possible there. In winter, Dolná Lehota offers opportunities for extended cross-country skiing trips; Krpačovo also has artificially snow-covered ski slopes with a stated total length of seven kilometres. When planning a winter visit, bear in mind that local snow conditions can vary and check the latest conditions in advance.

These offerings bring different seasonal highlights: swimming and boating are among the activities in Krpačovo, while cross-country skiing trips and ski slopes make winter a focus. For your travel planning, you can first decide on your preferred dates and activities, then check which destinations you would like to include in your stay.

Chapel, Church and Local History

The area’s architectural history includes two buildings dedicated to Saint John the Baptist: the Neoclassical chapel dates from 1818, and the church in Dolná Lehota was built in 1914. Inside the church is a 1915 mural by the renowned Spiš painter Jozef Hanula. A memorial in the Kulichova dolina commemorates the 1956 avalanche disaster, in which sixteen forestry workers lost their lives.

The local history goes back a long way, too: the settlement was founded in 1358 on the territory of the Ľupča estate by Petrík, an hereditary reeve from Predajná. Local mining resumed in the 19th century, and antimony ore was processed in Vajsková. From the 18th to the 20th century, Dolná Lehota was one of the so-called lace-making villages. These subjects—from mining to crafts—complement the natural and hiking destinations with a cultural perspective.

Getting There and Finding Accommodation

Dolná Lehota can be reached from Banská Bystrica via Podbrezová, with a turnoff through Lopej. When looking for a hotel in Dolná Lehota, you can base your choice on your planned excursions: seasonal access conditions matter for a hike to the waterfall, while the activities available in Krpačovo are relevant if that is the focus of your stay. For a specific accommodation, check its location in relation to your own plans.
