In Štiavnické Bane, educational trails, water reservoirs and historic churches tell the story of the connection between mining, water management and cultural heritage. This gives you a clear choice when planning your trip: should you focus on the trails and their stops, or on architectural history and sacred art? Both shape the town in different ways.
Mining and water management on educational trails
The Piargsky chodník is a 5.3-kilometre educational trail with nine information panels. It introduces the area’s most significant mining works, including shafts and adits, as well as ore processing. This means the focus is not only on individual structures, but also on the stages of work involved in mining. At 16 stops, the Piargsky vodohospodársky systém trail explains the uniqueness of the mining water-management system in one section of the Piarg group of water reservoirs.
The Piarg water-management educational trail has a long and a short route: the long route is 15.11 kilometres with an elevation difference of 100 metres, while the short route is 10.35 kilometres with an elevation difference of 85 metres. The routes differ by 4.76 kilometres and 15 metres of elevation. You can compare them using these two measurements without confusing the route lengths.
The Ökológia piargskych tajchov educational trail has a different focus. Its five stops introduce the biological environment and associated water quality of selected water reservoirs. The trail starts at the main dam of the Veľká Richňava reservoir. Two to three hours is a guideline for walking the trail; the duration may vary depending on conditions. The stops therefore bring together nature observation and water quality, while the other educational trails focus on mining history and historic water management.
The Veľká Windšachtská reservoir also links the history of technology with its use today. It was built between 1712 and 1715 and is one of the first four water reservoirs in the area of present-day Štiavnické Bane. The heritage-protection decision of 1 February 2024 states that the reservoir was being used for recreational purposes at that time. It also describes it as an inseparable part of the Banská Štiavnica water-management system, which has been authentically preserved on site, in its original extent, with only minor local disturbances or damage.
Church, monastery and sacred art
The Church of St Joseph and its associated monastery complex were built in Vindšachta between 1735 and 1754. The church is a single-nave Baroque building with a projecting tower. A two-storey monastery building adjoins its north side. This clear combination of church and monastery makes the complex a distinct point of interest alongside the educational trails and water reservoirs.
The furnishings include an organ dating from 1754. The well-known organ builder Martin Podkonický is considered its likely maker; this attribution is explicitly probable, not certain. The Štiavnické Bane–Horná Roveň Calvary also offers a glimpse into local sacred history: its six stations date from 1754 and lead to a Calvary group dating from 1730. The different dates also make the site an example of the religious heritage’s historical depth.
The Štiavnické Bane Town Conservation Area is part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site “Historic Town of Banská Štiavnica and the Technical Monuments in its Vicinity.” The World Heritage Site also includes the Banská Štiavnica Town Conservation Area and the protected historic zone of Hodruša-Hámre. All or part of the municipality of Štiavnické Bane lies within the core zone of the Banská Štiavnica Geopark. These designations add the wider context of protected architectural and technological history to the experiences on site.
If you are looking for a hotel in Štiavnické Bane, your planned focus can help structure your choice: educational trails and water reservoirs offer different themes from Baroque architecture, the organ and the Calvary. For the water trails, the stated route lengths and elevation differences help you compare them; the ecology trail also has a walking time as a planning guideline. You can start your search with the experiences you want to put at the centre of your trip.
