A freestanding Baroque bell tower on a rise among the houses is a prominent historical landmark in Kozelník. Together with the late Baroque coaching inn, a boundary stone and the Štiavnická Anča cycling route, the village offers different perspectives: architectural history, former postal connections, historical boundaries and cycling. Kozelník can therefore be explored both through specific architectural features and as part of a named cycling route.

Architectural history in the village landscape

The bell tower was built in the 18th century as a separate structure on a rise among the houses. In 1963, it was added to the Central Register of Monuments as a national cultural monument. Its location, architectural form and protected status give the tower three distinct historical points of reference. The access road and the area around the tower were also repaired in 2026, significantly later than the tower’s construction.

The church in Kozelník is shaped like a small boat, with its mast designed as a double cross. The village thus has two distinct architectural features: the bell tower is defined by its freestanding form and position on the rise, while the church is characterized by its boat shape and mast. Visitors who pay attention to architectural details can appreciate these as distinct motifs.

Postal traffic, boundaries and mining

Another building offers a glimpse into the history of transport. The late Baroque coaching inn was built in the 1790s and stands in the western part of the village, on the main road below the forest. In the 18th century, it served as a postal relay station: horses were changed there on the mail coaches. The building’s construction date and former function provide two specific historical points of reference; changing the horses connects it with the postal traffic of the time.

A boundary stone draws attention to the historical division of the area. It marks the boundaries between the Hont and Zvolen counties, as well as the edge of the so-called Terra banensium, the Banská region. The historic ironworks represents a different connection: it served as a supporting ironworks for the Banská Štiavnica mining district. Together, the two sites illustrate different aspects of history—territorial boundaries and the connection between ironworking and the mining district.

Kozelník on the Štiavnická Anča cycling route

The Štiavnická Anča cycling route runs from the center of Banská Štiavnica through Kozelník to Hronská Breznica. It is also suitable for less experienced cyclists. This makes the route a different kind of travel experience from the historic buildings: it follows a course with two named endpoints, while the bell tower, coaching inn, boundary stone and ironworks bring the village’s history into focus. When planning your trip, you can therefore consider whether Kozelník suits your plans primarily for its historical details or as a section of a cycling tour.

You can also look for an apartment in Kozelník with this focus in mind: first decide whether you would like to explore the architectural and local history more closely or include the cycling route as part of your trip. These two themes offer different perspectives on the same place, without requiring a fixed sightseeing itinerary.
