Veľké Pole lies at the transition between the Tríbeč and Vtáčnik mountain ranges. Landscape and history sit side by side here: the cadastral area includes protected natural areas, while the church, monument and local traditions tell of different eras. When planning your visit, it is therefore worth first deciding whether you would rather spend your time hiking, cycling an EXPERT MTB-rated route or exploring the historic village.

Landscape and trails

The cadastral area of Veľké Pole lies within the Ponitrie Protected Landscape Area. It is also home to the protected limestone cave Veľkopolská jaskyňa and the Sokolec a Skala Nature Reserve. Together with 13 other municipalities, Veľké Pole is part of one of the few surviving historic landscape complexes in Slovakia. The settlement is described as scattered, dispersed or štál-type. A protected landscape and a distinctive settlement pattern therefore come together here.

The Ponitrianska magistrála passes through Veľké Pole and is marked in red. The route register lists 34.1 km for the Ponitrianska magistrála from Veľké Pole to Handlová; the distance may change if the route authority revises it. From the municipal office, the summit of Vtáčnik can be reached via a red-marked hiking trail in about four hours. The actual walking time depends on conditions and your pace. The two planning details differ: the magistrála is described by its distance and endpoints, while the summit trail is also described by an approximate walking time.

The blue-marked cycling route 2317, “Penhýbel–Vtáčnik,” starts in Veľké Pole and ends at the summit of the Vtáčnik mountain range. It is 15.2 km long and classified as an EXPERT MTB route. This gives cyclists both the distance and the difficulty rating for planning their ride. As route conditions can change, it is advisable to check the latest information before setting off.

History in the village

The Pauline Order from Lefantovce founded a monastery in Veľké Pole in 1395. Mining is also part of the village’s history: silver and lead were extracted in the local mines, which were later closed. The Roman Catholic church was built around 1511 in the Late Gothic style.

In front of the church stands a chapel built in 1792 as a sign commemorating the severe hailstorm and the destruction of the entire village. In the centre, the “Pomník padlým vojakom” monument near the municipal office commemorates the soldiers who fell in the First World War. The plague column, known as the “Morový stĺp,” stands by the cultural centre. It was erected in 1787 to mark the fact that the plague had struck the municipality.

The cemetery beside the funeral home is also among the historic places described here: it has an oak-wood bell tower whose bell was cast in 2006. These architectural and commemorative features each tell a different part of the story—from the Late Gothic church to memorials to war and plague, and the bell tower at the cemetery.

Plan your stay around your interests

When looking for a holiday apartment in Veľké Pole, you can start by considering what you would like your stay to focus on. For hiking, trail markings, destinations and approximate walking times are useful points of reference; for the cycling route, its length and EXPERT MTB rating matter. The monastery’s founding, mining and monuments offer a different focus and insight into local history. This lets you choose a destination that matches your interests without committing to a set itinerary.
