Ostrý Grúň offers several starting points for planning your visit: hiking trails lead to the summit of Vtáčnik, a blue-marked cycling route connects the village with Píla, and historic sites tell the story of the community. The longer routes also differ considerably in length and elevation gain. This gives you the chance to decide whether outdoor activities or cultural history will shape your stay.

Hiking to Vtáčnik

Hiking trails to the summit of Vtáčnik often begin in Ostrý Grúň. One of them is marked yellow. The trail marking and starting point help you plan your hike; trail conditions may vary. So take the conditions on the day of your visit into account when planning.

Another way to explore the area is the Kľakovskou dolinou educational trail. It is 32 kilometres long and passes through Ostrý Grúň. The municipalities of Kľak, Ostrý Grúň and Hrabičov created it along the route of a disused forest railway. The educational trail thus combines a long distance with the course of a former railway line. In winter, it is also used as a cross-country ski trail. This seasonal use distinguishes it from the aforementioned hiking trails to Vtáčnik.

Cycling Routes with Different Profiles

When choosing a route, it is worth checking the details for each one. Cycling route 2596 runs from Hrad Revište via Ostrý Grúň to Píla and is 31.7 kilometres long. It is distinct from the blue-marked Ostrý Grúň–Píla cycling route, which covers 19 kilometres and 880 metres of elevation gain and is intended for experienced mountain bikers or e-bike riders. Its local starting point is clearly specified: it begins at the Chapel of Panny Márie in Ostrý Grúň.

The cycling route to Revište Castle also has its own directions. It starts in the centre of Ostrý Grúň, heads first towards Hrabičov and then turns into the Pokutská Valley. This means that different details are available for planning: route lengths for two cycling routes and directions for the route to the castle. Do not confuse these details with a single shared route.

Nature Nearby

The Pokutský Waterfall is nearby. It is protected as a natural monument and lies within the Ponitrie Protected Landscape Area. From the southern edge of the village, it can be reached by a mostly paved road along the Pokutský stream. The waterfall is therefore a destination outside the village, distinct from the routes that pass through or begin in Ostrý Grúň.

Culture, Remembrance and Architectural History

A notable event in local cultural life is the Ostrogrúnska ostrá kosa. It is regularly held in the meadows above Ostrý Grúň as part of the Slovak hand-mowing league. The first event was held on 10 June 2006; it also includes a short course in mowing. The event thus combines a hand-mowing competition with a practical introduction to the activity.

The monument Pomník umučených občanov, in the lower part of Ostrý Grúň, offers another perspective on the past. It stands at the site where residents were murdered on 21 January 1945 and is classified as a national cultural monument. The Ostrý Grúň Memorial Room reopened in 2005 in collaboration with the SNP Museum in Banská Bystrica; it is located next to the municipal office.

The village’s architecture and art can also be explored separately. The Chapel of Nanebovzatia Panny Márie is a folk Classicist building from the late 18th century. There is also a sculpture of a mother and child, dating from 1954, in front of the municipal office. The sculpture is a separate point of interest and should not be confused with the Pomník umučených občanov monument.
