The former forest railway provides a distinctive theme for planning a trip to Hrabičov: the open-air exhibition and the Pokútsky Bridge are reminders of it, while the Kľakovskou dolinou nature trail also follows the route of a disused forest railway. There are also two cycling routes with different landscape settings, as well as the Church of the Seven Sorrows of the Virgin Mary. If you want to focus on forests, cycling and the history of technology, these features can help you plan the main themes of your stay.

Nature trail along the former forest railway route

The Kľakovskou dolinou nature trail is 32 kilometres long and is considered the longest forestry nature trail in Slovakia. Hrabičov, together with Kľak and Ostrý Grúň, is one of the municipalities that built it along the route of a disused forest railway. The trail thus combines a forestry theme with the course of the former railway line. In winter, it can also be used as a cross-country ski trail. This adds a specific seasonal winter sports option to its forestry focus—a difference you can take into account when choosing when to travel.

Forest railway exhibition and monument

Hrabičov has an open-air exhibition about the history of the former forest railway. It includes two railway carriages, a depot, historical photographs and a map. Along this route, the Pokútsky Bridge is the only monument of the former forest railway preserved in its original condition. This gives you two different ways to explore the topic: the objects and displays brought together in the exhibition, and the preserved structure itself. The forest railway heritage can therefore be understood both through the exhibition and through a specific monument.

Cycling with different landscape settings

For cyclists, it is useful to distinguish between two route descriptions. The cycling route between Hrabičov and Horné Hámre runs mostly along forest roads in the natural surroundings of the Vtáčnik Mountains. Another cycling route passes behind Hrabičov through the Pokútská Valley. The first is characterised above all by its forest roads and its setting in the Vtáčnik Mountains; the second by its course through the valley. If you want to choose your trip based on the landscape, you can take these different features into account.

Another cultural point of interest

The Church of the Seven Sorrows of the Virgin Mary in Hrabičov is a filial church of the Kľak parish. This church connection adds another aspect of local history to the themes of the forest railway and cycling. If you are interested in both technological history and church-related heritage when choosing a destination, you can explore these as separate themes here.

Plan your journey

Regular intercity buses to Hrabičov run only from Žarnovica. If you are travelling by bus, check the current timetable before setting off. Hrabičov has no designated parking for tourists or cyclists. Take this into account when planning your journey and check the parking situation before your visit.
