Berbatovo lies at the foot of the Seličevica and is the destination of a described hiking route from Vukmanovo via the summit of Ibrovica. The route is 11 kilometres long. Other points of interest include the Dimitrije Church, a record of houses and mills from 1498, and the village’s role in the struggle to liberate Niš during the Second World War. If you are looking for holiday accommodation in Berbatovo, these highlights can help you decide whether to focus your travel plans primarily on the landscape, hiking or local history.
Location and landscape
Berbatovo lies at the foot of Mount Seličevica and on its slopes. The highest point in the village is 698 m above sea level. Berbatovo’s cadastral area forms part of the large forest complexes in the hilly and mountainous zone of the municipality of Palilula, on the slopes of the Suva Planina mountain range. The area is therefore characterised both by its elevation and by its connection to large forest complexes.
Hiking in the Seličevica
The hiking route is 11 kilometres long in total. It runs from Vukmanovo via the 903 m summit of Ibrovica and ends with a descent to Berbatovo. The starting point, summit and destination are named in sequence: the route goes from one place to another rather than returning to the start as a loop. The 903 m refers to the summit’s elevation; Berbatovo’s highest point, by contrast, is 698 m above sea level. A route description connected with the hiking event of 2 February 2020 records its course. If you are planning to hike the route, check the current conditions before setting out.
The 2023–2029 municipal development plan describes an ascent of the Seličevica that the “Preslap” mountaineering association from Niš has been organising for several years with support from the City of Niš. Check the current event dates before travelling.
Church and local history
The village is home to the Church of Saint Great Martyr Dimitrije, built in 1990. A Turkish census from 1498 recorded 24 houses and three mills in Berbatovo. These figures provide a precise, early-dated reference for the area’s history, while the church adds a later construction date. Berbatovo and its surroundings also played a special role in the struggle to liberate Niš during the Second World War. The historical references thus range from a census entry to the wartime context around Niš, while the church provides its own local landmark.
Getting there and planning
A 2022 description names suburban bus line 23K as a circular connection between Niš, Vukmanovo and Berbatovo and says that it runs daily. Check current departure times before travelling. The bus line and hiking route answer different planning questions: the line connects the three named places, while the hike runs from Vukmanovo via Ibrovica and descends to Berbatovo.
