Northwest of Trudelj lies Ostrvica, whose summit reaches 758 metres. Rivers and local traditions also give the place a distinctive character: they point to the upper valley of the Kozeljica, local names and stories surrounding the construction of Ostrvica.

Ostrvica: Access and Walking Route

Near Trudelj, access to Ostrvica is via the local Rudnik–Varnice asphalt road to the foot of the mountain. From there, it takes less than 30 minutes on foot to reach the summit. This time refers to the walk from the foot of the mountain; allow separate time for the approach by road. This way, the access and the subsequent walk to the summit can be considered as two separate sections.

Valley and Watercourses

Trudelj lies in the upper valley of the Kozeljica, which is called the Trudeljska reka in this section. The Trudeljska reka is formed by the Kasamovac, Crna reka and Bunaja streams. The Begovska reka is classified differently: it rises in Trudelj below Topovište, at an altitude of 609 metres. The spring Careva Voda lies in the forest of the same name below the Crna reka. For the Trudeljska reka, its local name and the three streams that form it are key reference points; the Begovska reka is described by its source and elevation.

Landscape, Forest and Climate

The Zagrađe–Trudelj area and Ostrvica form a continuous volcanic massif. Several communal village forests lie on the slopes and summits of the surrounding mountains. Beech trees predominate in Trudelj’s communal forests; sessile oaks, maples and ashes are also found there. The village houses stand on the slopes of the aforementioned mountains and along the sides of their ridges, on level ground. The climate description is also geographically limited: one part of Trudelj has the mildest subhumid climate in the municipality.

Local Names and Traditions

One local tradition links the name Trudelj to pregnant women from the village who carried stones to build Ostrvica. Another explanation connects the name of the hamlet Varnice with the lime kilns and fires that burned there during the construction of Ostrvica. Both stories link place names to the same construction project, but emphasize different things: the stones carried in one, and the kilns and fires in the other. The name of the river Staroselska reka and the hill name Bošnjačko Groblje each recall an earlier settlement. Trudelj’s village Zavetina takes place on the Sunday before the feast of Young Saint Nicholas.
