Thermal waters, monastic history and a protected gorge landscape give Ovcar Banja its distinct character. Blagoveštenje Monastery stands above the settlement; trails, waterfalls and the natural history centre offer other specific things to explore during your stay. When planning, you can prioritise nature, religious heritage or activities on the water. These options vary considerably: some routes lead to monasteries, while others pass through natural and cultural sites.
Protected Landscape and Waterfalls
The Ovčar-Kablar Gorge is protected as a landscape of exceptional importance and as a nature area of exceptional importance; it is classified as Category I. The gorge is also part of Serbia’s ecological network and is designated as an IBA site and an Emerald site. Ovcar Banja lies within the Ovčar-Kablar landscape of exceptional importance, surrounded by rivers, lakes and extensive green areas of the Ovčar and Kablar mountains. The mountains reach 985 and 885 metres respectively.
Banjski Potok also shapes the landscape: one section has canyon-like formations, several waterfalls and a large travertine terrace. The waterfalls are about 1.4 kilometres from Ovcar Banja. Because the road is narrow and parking and turning options are limited, visitors are advised to cover the entire distance on foot. Check trail conditions in advance, as they may change.
Monasteries, a Manuscript and a Memorial Site
Blagoveštenje Monastery stands on a hill above the settlement of Ovcar Banja. It preserves the Blagoveštenje Gospel, which dates to 1372. In the wider gorge area, ten monasteries and two holy sites form part of the religious heritage.
Another point of interest is Kađenica Cave, on the right bank of the West Morava, one kilometre upstream from Ovcar Banja. Its entrance has been prepared for visitors. The main chamber, with suggested stalactite formations, is also a sacred memorial site. The cultural sites therefore differ in both location and character: the monastery preserves a manuscript with a known date, while the cave is a memorial site.
Natural History Centre and Trails
The natural history centre is in the centre of Ovcar Banja. It displays specimens of vertebrate species from the Ovčar-Kablar Gorge, including fish, amphibians, reptiles, birds and mammals. The centre also has a room for educational activities and presentations. Visitors can learn there about the gorge’s natural values, the importance of environmental protection and the tourist offer.
Marked hiking trails from Ovcar Banja lead to monasteries and offer views of the forested mountains and the West Morava. Marked cycling routes in the gorge pass viewpoints, old roads, tunnels, monasteries, waterfalls, springs, churches and shrines. Hiking focuses on monasteries and views; the cycling routes pass a broader mix of natural and cultural sites. As trail conditions may change, check them before setting out.
Thermal Waters and Activities on the Water
The thermal waters of Ovcar Banja have a temperature of 35 to 38 °C. Accounts report that they were used to treat people from Roman times through the Middle Ages and the Ottoman period, and into the 19th century. This historical connection adds another dimension to the area’s natural and cultural landscape.
A regatta is traditionally held every year in July in Ovcar Banja. If you want to include the event in your travel plans, check the date and programme in advance; both may change. From the gorge, you can also explore the West Morava and Međuvršje Lake by boat. Check departure times and operating details in advance, as these may also change.
