At the Sentiero delle Coste, gypsum and water shape the landscape around Montegiardino’s old Borgo. The trail crosses gypsum terrain into the densely vegetated gorge of the Torrente Marano. Its waters have carved deep gashes and numerous striking cavities into the gypsum, through which the Sentiero delle Coste runs. The trail corridor is used by migratory birds, particularly during the autumn migration. The rare Italian cave salamander (Speleomantes italicus), a lungless amphibian, also lives in the damp rock crevices and on the damp rock faces along the Sentiero.

Hiking Between Gorge and Quarry

Another hiking trail is the Sentiero i Gessi di Montegiardino, thematic trail No. 3 of the Cammino del Titano. It starts in the medieval centre of the Castello di Montegiardino and explores the site of an old gypsum quarry. Alongside the water-carved gorge, the landscape of a former mining area is therefore a focus of the hikes.

Two specific details are useful for planning your hikes: the Sentiero i Gessi is approximately 2.3 kilometres long and rated moderate. There is an equipped picnic area with benches and a large wooden table on the Sentiero delle Coste. The two trails thus offer different ways to choose a hike based on its landscape and character.

Borgo, Castle and Local History

The Sentiero delle Coste leads back to Montegiardino’s fortified castle, whose characteristic narrow lanes are worth exploring. Montegiardino is considered a distinctive Borgo, with well-kept, well-preserved lanes. The Borgo’s castle gate is also a place worth seeing. The old castle is also distinguished by its characteristic architecture and views of rare beauty.

The church of Montegiardino preserves another trace of the town’s history: it dates from the 19th century and contains antependia (paliotti) from the previous century. The lanes, fortified castle and church provide different cultural points of interest along the walk, while keeping the landscape of the Sentiero delle Coste in view.

Discover Montegiardino’s Culture

The 26th edition of the Presepe Vivente di Montegiardino was announced for 26 December 2025. The residents of Montegiardino created the living nativity scene in its entirety. At this edition, visitors could walk among workshops, discover traditional crafts and watch artisans at work. The route culminated in a live tableau of the Nativity. This historic edition thus combined local creativity with insights into traditional craftsmanship.

Culture in the Wider Destination of San Marino

In the wider destination of San Marino, the San Marino Historic Centre and Mount Titano World Heritage site covers 55 hectares, including Monte Titano and the historic centre of San Marino. The World Heritage site also includes towers, walls, gates and bastions. The First Tower, Guaita, is the oldest of the three towers and is said to have served as a refuge for the first inhabitants around the year 1000.

The Second Tower, also known as the Castello della Cesta, stands at 755 metres above sea level on the highest peak of Monte Titano. It forms the middle section of a panoramic route linking San Marino’s three historic towers. The tower houses the Museum of Ancient Arms, with around 700 exhibits spanning different types and periods. These places are part of the wider destination of San Marino’s distinct cultural offerings.
