Red-breasted geese overwinter at Lake Beibugeac – a clear seasonal connection to nature in Plopul. Protected areas, lagoon and steppe landscapes, and historical traces add to this natural focus.

Winter Birds and Protected Areas

Red-breasted geese (Branta ruficollis) overwinter at Lake Beibugeac during their migrations along the Black Sea coast. If you want to make this species the focus of your trip, winter is the right time to plan your visit. The lake is in the village of Plopul, about four kilometres from the municipality of Murighiol. The 170-hectare Lacul Plopu-Beibugeac area is designated as a special avifaunal protected area and managed by S.O.R. Tulcea. The strictly protected Sărături–Murighiul zone lies between Murighiul and Plopu. The seasonal birdlife and the geographical location of the protected areas therefore offer different points of interest for nature enthusiasts. If the red-breasted goose is especially important to you, winter will help you choose when to travel; the protected areas provide further geographical reference points.

Lagoon and Steppe Landscapes

Plopul is surrounded by lagoon and steppe landscapes typical of the Razim-Sinoe region. Hiking, nature watching and rural tourism are all options in this landscape. This offers a broader perspective on the region in addition to its seasonal wildlife. South of the local DJ 222C road, between Plopu and Sarinasuf, there is a lake connected to the Razim Lagoon. Its location between the two place names and its connection to the lagoon give this landscape feature a specific geographical context.

Local History and Archaeological Traces

The present-day village of Plopul was founded by Turks around 1857; a Christian church was built in Plopul in 1874. The approximate date of the village’s founding and the precisely dated church construction are two milestones in the history of the area. Another archaeological trace is Cetatea Zaporojenilor: its ruins were discovered southeast of Plopul, on a 75-metre-high hill near Lake Razim. The church and the ruins offer different historical points of interest – religious architectural history on the one hand, and an archaeological discovery on the other. Plopul’s traditional church festival is dedicated to Saint Paraskeva and takes place on 14 October. If you want to travel for this festival, check the event programme for the year you plan to visit.

Getting Around and Choosing the Right Base

Plopul is accessible by road and serves as a starting point for boat trips into the Danube Delta and to Lake Razelm. The official land-based visitor route D3, however, runs from Murighiol to Lake Sărături and back. This distinction matters when choosing where to stay: boat trips start in Plopul, while route D3 starts and ends in Murighiol. The options therefore differ both in mode of transport and starting point. If you plan to take a boat trip, confirm the specific departure and availability in advance.
