Bazoșu Nou combines a large dendrological park with a local history that reaches back to the village’s founding. The Bazoș Arboretum covers 62 ha and is located in the Bazoșu Nou area of Timiș County. If you are looking for a focus for your trip, botanical diversity and local history take centre stage here.
The Arboretum and Its Botanical Diversity
The Bazoș Arboretum is home to 776 taxa, including 231 conifer species. These figures describe the scale of the collection; several areas give the park its distinctive layout: they include Parcul Mare, Parcul American and several nurseries where exotic species are cultivated. Different groups of trees thus sit alongside the targeted cultivation of exotic species.
Since 1994, the dendrological park has been designated a protected area for the conservation of the biodiversity of the gene pool and ecological fund. Its landscape lies in the flat plain of the Timiș and Bega rivers, at an altitude of 95–97 m. This helps put the natural setting in context: the park is part of the lowland landscape, not a mountainous area.
A notable individual tree complements the collections. The oak standing in the park, described as the oldest oak in Timiș County, is said to be over 500 years old, with a circumference of 6 m and a height of 30 m.
Local History and Culture
Bazoșu Nou was founded in 1926, when 26 families from Transylvania settled there. They came from Tălmăcel in the commune of Tălmaciu near Sibiu. The village was called Határpuszta in Hungarian and was also known as “Colonia Hotar.” These names and the families’ origins root the village’s history in specific places and a clear date.
The “Cuv. Paraschiva” church is another datable milestone in the village’s history: it was built in 1961. The 2023 edition of the Ruga satului Bazoșu Nou, held at the Bazoșu Nou Cultural House, featured authentic folklore, local dances and traditional clothing. This describes that particular edition; if you are planning your trip around an event, check the latest dates in advance.
When choosing a destination, the two main themes are easy to distinguish: the Arboretum represents the botanical side, while the founding history, church and Ruga offer cultural points of interest.
Plan Your Routes and Journey
The 21 km-long Route 5 leads from Lunca Timișului via Pădurea Giroc and the Timiș embankment to the Parcul Dendrologic Bazoșu Nou. A route from Timișoara to the park goes via Rudicica, Urseni, Moșnița Nouă, Moșnița Veche and Bucovăț.
The access information for the Arboretum lists Remetea Mare railway station, as well as national road DN6 (Timișoara–Remetea Mare) and the county road Remetea Mare–Bucovăț–Bazoșu Nou. Check train connections and road conditions before setting off so you can plan your journey based on current conditions.
If you would like to combine nature and local history in one trip, Bazoșu Nou offers two clearly distinct themes. The Arboretum is the botanical highlight; the church, founding history and documented edition of the Ruga add cultural points of interest. When looking for suitable accommodation, you can use these interests as a starting point for planning your trip.
