Şaru Dornei brings together the natural and cultural themes of the Călimani region on several scales: a visitor centre presents the natural values of the national park as well as the local landscape and culture; outdoors, the focus is on bogs, rock formations and peaks. There is also a circular cycling route and a trail with views of several mountain ranges. When choosing, you can take into account the different landscapes and the specific time estimates.
Visitor centre and bog trail
The Călimani National Park Visitor Centre in Şaru Dornei opened in 2013. Its educational exhibition covers the natural values of the national park and also presents the local landscape and culture. This brings together the protected area’s themes and the influences that have shaped the local landscape, while the trails identify specific destinations in the terrain.
At Tinovul Şaru Dornei, a specially designed themed trail offers a two-hour exploration of the hidden world of the bog. The duration gives this natural attraction a clear timeframe and makes it easy to plan as a separate activity. It refers to exploring the bog; for the route to the 12 Apostoli peak, by contrast, the time estimate covers the round trip.
Rock formations and mountain destinations
The 12 Apostoli nature reserve is known for rock formations shaped like human and animal figures, which attract many visitors. The name also appears as a specific hiking destination: the 12 Apostoli peak can be reached from Gura Haitii, in the municipality of Şaru Dornei, via a trail marked with a blue dot. The route is about 12 kilometres long and takes approximately three hours there and back. Check trail conditions locally. This makes it possible to distinguish the time needed for this hike from the two-hour bog exploration.
At 2,100 metres, Pietrosul is the highest peak in the Călimani Mountains. From Gura Haitii, a hiking trail leads to the peak via 12 Apostoli and Pietrele Roșii. For the hike to 12 Apostoli, the trail markings, distance and approximate round-trip time are specified; for Pietrosul, the elevation and route via the two named landscape features provide orientation.
Mountain views and cycling route
The Drăgoiasa–Mănăstirea Neagra Şarului–Şaru Dornei trail offers views of the Călimani peaks, Muntele Bucinişul with its shepherds’ huts lined along the ridge, and the Bistriței Mountains in the background. The trail leads into the municipality of Şarul Dornei, passes Mănăstirea Neagra Şarului and ends in the village of Negra Şarului, at the tourist information centre. Part of its appeal lies in the succession of different landscapes: the Călimani peaks, a ridge dotted with shepherds’ huts and a mountain range in the background.
Another way to explore the area is the 05MB21 cycling route, a circular loop in the Depresiunea Șarul Dornei around the Tinovul Şarul Dornei nature reserve. It is described as a cycling loop, while the destinations at 12 Apostoli and Pietrosul are reached via hiking trails. Conditions on the cycling route may change seasonally; check them before setting out.
Cultural event
The cultural side includes the Sărbătoarea Bujorului de Munte in Şaru Dornei. Its 19th edition took place on 6 and 7 June 2026; the event is one of the important cultural and tourist events in Țara Dornelor. The date places this edition clearly on the calendar and complements the natural attractions with a culturally significant regional event.
