Ciocănești combines ornamented houses and egg art with recurring cultural events and outdoor activities. When planning your trip, it is worth distinguishing local collections and crafts from events, as well as rafting and hiking. This will help you decide whether culture, a specific date or an outdoor activity is the main draw.

Ornaments, Traditional Costumes and Egg Art

More than 600 houses in Ciocănești have exterior walls painted with traditional geometric motifs. Traditional motifs also appear on local costumes. These patterns can therefore be seen on both house facades and clothing.

The Muzeul Etnografic al Comunei Ciocănești houses hundreds of exhibits relating to the settlement’s past; individual displays may change. Casa Muzeu Țăran Leontina preserves old costumes from the Bistrița Valley and traditional objects. The Muzeul Național al Ouălor Încondeiate is considered the only collection in Romania to feature decorated eggs and eggs decorated using the wax technique from across the country. The collections therefore focus on different subjects: the history of the settlement, costumes and objects, and egg decoration.

The craft of egg decoration is practiced in around 20 craft workshops. Alongside the collections, a local craft tradition is therefore also part of Ciocănești’s cultural offerings.

Plan Around the Festival Calendar

The Muzicamer Festival has been held every year in Ciocănești on August 15 since 2011, and is dedicated to popularizing classical music in rural areas. The National Trout Festival is also held in Ciocănești on August 15. The National Decorated Egg Festival takes place every year around Easter.

Another fixed date is Măsura oilor on May 29. It takes place before the flocks are driven into the mountains. The dates are not all equally precise: some events are tied to a calendar date, while the egg festival takes place around Easter. If you are planning your trip around a festival, confirm the current edition and date in advance.

Rafting or a Hiking Trail

Raft trips on the Bistrița are organized in Ciocănești as part of a preserved local tradition. The river provides the setting for an activity that differs from the cultural collections and festivals.

The Ciocănești – Pârâul Recele – Mănăstirea Sfânta Cruce (Ciocănești) – Valea Bancu – Coșna hiking trail runs from the village of Ciocănești via Pârâul Recele, Mănăstirea Sfânta Cruce and Valea Bancu to the village of Coșna. The named stops define the route and help you fit the hike into your travel plans. Check trail conditions before setting off.
