In Vatra Moldoviței Commune, the “Buna-Vestire” Church of Moldovița Monastery is listed as a historic monument under code LMI SV-II-m-A-05673.01. Moldovița Monastery was built in 1532 by Petru Rareș, near the ruins of a 15th-century monastery. This brings two distinct landmarks in the monastery’s history into view. The monastery complex includes the monastery and church, the entrance tower with bell tower, the enclosing wall and the monks’ cells. The church is therefore part of a larger complex and not its only element.

Monastery history, egg art and a school museum

At the “Lucia Condrea” Egg Museum, the variety of decorated eggs takes centre stage. The collection comprises more than 11,000 exhibits in 106 display cases and is divided into three sections: unique works by Lucia Condrea, very old decorated eggs and an international collection. The museum’s international summer school brings together Romanian and foreign participants who learn the art of decorating eggs. The collection and summer school thus highlight two sides of the subject: the works on display and the learning of the craft.

The ethnographic school museum in Paltinu contains objects related to sheep farming, blacksmithing and spinning. It was founded in 2000 at the initiative of teacher Huțuleac Tudorița, with the active support of pupils from the village school. The three sections draw attention to different craft activities. Education is also linked to the school: pupils guide visitors through the museum.

Trails and transport history

The Bucovina section of Via Transilvanica passes through Vatra Moldoviței and from there through the Obcinele Bucovinei to Mestecăniș Pass in the commune of Pojorâta. This makes it possible to see the village as part of a longer route through the Bucovina mountain ranges to a named mountain pass destination.

The marked Vatra Moldoviței–Ciumârna–Obcina Mare mountain trail is 18 km long, has an elevation gain of 350 metres and is marked in yellow; it takes 8–9 hours. It starts at Moldovița Monastery, passes the ruins of the old monastery and climbs to Dealul Mănăstirii, offering a wide view over the commune. The trail then passes through Ciumârna, climbs the slope of Obcina Mare and heads back towards Vatra Moldoviței. The trail is considered accessible in spring, summer and autumn. Check the trail markings, route, access and seasonal conditions locally.

Another option is the recommended Pojorâta–Vama mountain biking route. It is 111 km long, has a moderate difficulty level and runs along paved and gravel roads. Between Moldovița and Frumosu, it passes through Vatra Moldoviței. Check the route details locally before setting off. Together, these descriptions show two different tour profiles: a marked mountain trail with a stated duration and elevation gain, and a moderately difficult mountain biking route with specified road surfaces.

Moldovița’s narrow-gauge railway also has its own history: it began as a timber transport line and is now known as the “Mocănița Huțulca.” Alongside monastery history, collections and routes, this offers a glimpse of the region’s transport history.
