The Mănăstirea Putna Monastery was built by Ștefan cel Mare between 1466 and 1469. By the time of Petru Rareș, it had become a princely necropolis for members of its founder’s family. Shortly after its consecration, it became an important centre of Romanian culture and art. Its construction period, dynastic commemoration, and cultural significance offer different historical perspectives on the monastery.

Monastic Heritage and Orientation

The Treasury Tower is one of the monastery’s surviving fortifications. The monastery museum is on the west side of the complex, next to the Paraclis. This connects the historical perspective with a specific point of reference within the complex.

Churches and Craftsmanship

In Putna, the sacred architectural history can be seen in churches from different periods and denominations. The Orthodox wooden church Biserica de lemn „Intrarea Maicii Domnului în Biserică“ is also known as Biserica de lemn „Dragoș Vodă“ or Schitul Putna. According to tradition, it dates from the mid-14th century. Today it serves as a chapel and museum; check locally whether visits are possible.

The Orthodox Biserica „Nașterea Maicii Domnului“ was built between 1900 and 1908 and stands in the village cemetery, near the wooden church. The Roman Catholic Biserica „Coborârea Duhului Sfânt“ was built in 1936 and is in the centre of Putna village. The construction dates thus range from the traditionally recorded mid-14th century to church buildings of the 20th century.

Putna’s cultural tradition is also reflected in egg decorating, an artistic craft tradition that remains alive today. This takes the story beyond sacred buildings and monastic history to a craft that is also part of the cultural character of the place.

Cave, Hill, and Landscape

The wooded hills around Putna reach heights of up to 800 metres. Chilia lui Daniil Sihastrul is a cave carved into a rock in the valley of the Vițău stream. It is about one kilometre from Mănăstirea Putna Monastery. This distance is approximate; actual conditions on foot may vary.

Dealul Crucii, also called Crucişorul, is marked by a monumental stone cross without an inscription. The hill lies southeast of the monastery, just across the Putna stream. While the rock and valley define the description of the cave, the cross and the location across the stream serve as points of reference for Dealul Crucii.
