Arbore Commune places its churches within a broader cultural context: the Church of the Beheading of St John the Baptist in Arbore is part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site “Churches of Moldavia”. This site comprises eight churches in northern Moldavia with exterior paintings. The church was built in 1502 by Hetman Luca Arbore, linking local history with a cultural heritage of regional significance.
Church Art and Architectural History
The church’s exterior painting program includes the scene “The Siege of Constantinople”. The communal description calls it the last example of this scene on the exterior of a church. This specific image motif thus sits alongside the exterior paintings that are the shared feature of the eight churches in the UNESCO World Heritage Site.
The Church of Sfânta Treime tells a different architectural story. Construction began on 10 May 1901 and was completed in 1908; the church was consecrated on 29 August 1912. Its iconography also offers a striking detail: it includes a series of 16 figures considered national saints, depicted in Romanian folk costumes. The construction period, completion and consecration mark distinct stages in the church’s history.
The year 1912 also features in the history of the Evangelical Church in Arbore: it was built by the local Evangelical community, which consisted mainly of German settlers. Neo-Gothic influences can be seen, among other features, in the tall bell tower and the high, round-arched windows. The church has preserved some of its original furnishings, including wooden pews and a simple altar. The commune is thus home to different church buildings, each with its own architecture and history.
The Toader Hrib Village Museum also adds to the picture of the cultural heritage. Over three generations, the Hrib family assembled its collection of household items used by Romanian peasants, weapons and old coins. These categories range from objects of everyday rural life to weapons and coins.
Landscape and Local Connections
Arbore’s landscape is characterized by gentle hills and remnants of forest. To the west, the Obcinele Bucovinei form the backdrop and mark the area’s boundary. The commune also includes a 50-hectare area of acacia woodland associated with the “FLOARE DE SALCÂM” folk festival. The seasonal acacia blossom determines the timing of the festival. An apple and cherry orchard is another local attraction.
Customs and Directions
New Year customs in Arbore include Căluțul, Irozii and Banda. During the Irozii performance, a group of musicians plays, while the performers wear traditional costumes decorated with beads and colorful ribbons. If you want to plan your visit around such a performance, check the latest information in advance: specific performance arrangements may vary.
