Comarnic brings together cultural sites and trails along the Prahova and Pleșuva. The DN1 national road runs through the town, connecting Ploiești with Brașov. For your trip planning, you can focus on two themes: the churches, houses and museum, and the hiking and mountain biking routes.

Cultural Sites in Comarnic and Posada

The Muzeul Cinegetic al Carpaților Posada is located in the Posada district on the left bank of the Prahova, along the DN1 and about four kilometres from Sinaia. It is housed in Martha Bibescu Castle and was founded in 1996 as a department of the Muzeul Național Peleș. The location and the museum’s history are therefore closely linked.

The Schitul Lespezi near Posada is situated in a forest at the foot of Pleșuva Mică, also on the left bank of the Prahova. It is a monument of 17th-century Romanian feudal art; its frescoes were painted by Pârvu Mutu. Another architectural landmark is the Biserica Sfântul Nicolae in the Vatra Sat district: it was built in 1905 in the Byzantine style, with three towers. Gheorghe Valentin Bibescu and his wife, Martha Bibescu, donated the iconostasis.

Older architectural heritage can also be found along the DN1 main road: more than twenty listed or historic houses stand there, built between 1878 and 1930. Thus, individual religious buildings and groups of historic houses offer distinct themes.

Another cultural destination is Biblioteca din pădure, a library in the forest. The “Proiectul Cărților Călătoare” project allows people to exchange books freely there. It adds a literary theme to the area’s architecture and local history.

Hiking Trails, Peaks and a Waterfall

One route leads from Comarnic via Ghioșeștiul de Sus to Vârful Pleșuva. It runs north of the town along the left bank of the Prahova, is easier at first and becomes quite steep near the summit. In good visibility, the route offers views across the entire Prahova Valley as far as Câmpina and onward towards Ploiești. The view therefore depends on clear conditions.

The surrounding area also has several mountain trails that can be completed on foot as return trips in a few hours. These routes differ in duration and terrain, so check local trail conditions before setting out. Comarnic also serves as a starting point for numerous mountain biking trails connected to Valea Doftanei.

Cascada Posada is located in Valea Conciului in Comarnic, at the town’s outskirts towards Sinaia. A route description from 2023 gives an unmarked walking route of about three kilometres from the DN1 on Strada Podu lui Neag. It crosses the railway line and follows the water. Check access and trail conditions before your visit, as local conditions may change.

Events and Trip Planning

The Festivalul Drapelului is dedicated to the Romanian national flag, Romanian values, national folklore and music. The third consecutive edition took place in 2024; check future dates before planning your trip. A local tradition brings several people to the summit of Pleșuva each year to raise the Romanian flag there again. The initiative comes from the mayor; details of the ceremony may vary from year to year.

If you’re looking for a hotel in Comarnic, first decide whether cultural sites or trails will be the main focus of your trip.
