Băicoi lies at the transition from the foothills of the Carpathians in the Prahova Bend to the Ploiești Plain. Two distinct perspectives emerge when planning a stay: the lakes near Valea Stelii, with their distinctive measurements and history of therapeutic treatments, and the local history of churches and industry. If you are looking for a hotel in Băicoi, you can first decide which of these themes you would like to make the focus of your trip.

The lakes near Valea Stelii

Lake Seninu, the salt lake near Valea Stelii, has a surface area of 1,515 m² and is 1.20 to 1.50 m deep. The water has a high content of chlorine, iodine and bromine. Nearby is the sapropel mud lake near Valea Stelii: it covers 228 m² and is 0.8 m deep. In direct comparison, Seninu is both larger in area and deeper; for the sapropel mud lake, by contrast, only one depth measurement is recorded.

The two lakes were prepared for therapeutic treatments because of their mineral content and the organisms living in the mud. This led to the development of an area for balneary tourism. The combination of the properties of the water and mud explains the lakes’ history of therapeutic use. If you are planning a trip because of this, check current visitor options in advance.

Churches and architectural history

The “Sfinţii Împăraţi” Church was commissioned by Cleopatra Trubeţkoi and built between 1848 and 1853. After the painting was completed, it was consecrated and opened for worship in 1853. Its furnishings include imperial icons and twelve Prăznicare painted by Nicolae Grigorescu. Its construction, consecration and artistic furnishings each give the church a distinct historical significance.

The “Sf. Anton și Sf. Împărați” Church in Băicoi was built by Cleopatra Trubetzkoi and is listed as number 2371 in the register of historic monuments. Another building from the town’s church history is Biserica Cioara in the Dâmbu district: it is a plastered timber building, erected around 1790 as a place of prayer.

The boyar manor associated with Cleopatra Trubețkoi was built between 1838 and 1845 in the neoclassical style. Its chapel is neo-Gothic and now a ruin; the years 1787 and 1828 are associated with it. The manor thus brings together two distinct styles: the neoclassical building and the neo-Gothic chapel. This combination adds another chapter to the local architectural history alongside the churches.

Oil history and trip planning

Oil production began in Țintea in 1864, using drilling. Alongside the churches and manor, early industrial history is another distinct aspect of the town’s history. Băicoi is also located on Romanian national road DN 1.

A report published in 2024 describes a cycling tour from Florești through Păulești and other places in Prahova County; along the way, the cyclists passed the churches of Băicoi. If you use the described ride as inspiration, check the current route before setting out on your own tour.

When choosing a specific hotel, check its location and current availability before planning your day around it.
