A manor house built from carved fir wood and trails through valleys, mixed forest and over a ridge bring different highlights to Ruscova. Conacul Drahneilor connects local architectural history with the landscape of Valea Dragmirov; farther afield, described routes lead to Vf. Mihailecu and Lacul Vinderel. The area also has Ukrainian-influenced cultural sites and a nature park that includes Ruscova.
Manor House and Ukrainian Cultural Heritage
The traditional MaramureÈ™ manor house Conacul Drahneilor is located in Ruscova, in Valea Dragmirov. It was built from carved fir wood on a stone foundation and has a shingle roof, typical of traditional buildings in MaramureÈ™. From Ruscova, a paved road about four kilometers long crosses the Ruscova River and runs through Valea Dragmirov to the manor house. Road conditions may change; check them before your visit.
Ukrainian-influenced cultural sites are also part of the area’s character. The Ukrainian monastery „Nașterea Sf. Ioan Botezătorul“ is located in Ruscova-Oblaz. The wooden church „Sfântul Ierarh Nicolae“ in the hamlet of Oblaz was built at its current location in 1954, using wood from the former parish church in Ruscova. The church’s history therefore encompasses both its location in Oblaz and the reused wood from Ruscova.
A specific cultural event is documented for Sunday, April 15, 2018: the „Festivalul cântecului şi dansului ucrainean“ was held in Ruscova that day. All artistic groups from Ukrainian-influenced communities in Maramureș, as well as two artistic groups from Ukraine, were invited. The date identifies the festival as a past event and does not imply that it will be held again.
Landscape in the Ruscova Valley
Ruscova lies in Munții Maramureșului Nature Park and is one of the Ukrainian-influenced communities along the Ruscova Valley. The terrain is varied and mountainous, with hills at elevations of 600 to 900 meters predominating. This elevation range describes the hills of the commune, not the summit elevation of the longer route.
Wildlife is also part of the natural environment. The Eurasian otter (Lutra lutra) is permanently present in the Vișeu catchment and also occurs along the Ruscova River. Sightings are not guaranteed. If you observe wildlife, keep your distance and follow the park rules.
Trails, Ridge and Water
One described marked route crosses the Ruscova Valley and then follows the path through Valea Paulic for about 500 meters. It passes through the clusters of houses in Smereca, through a beech-fir mixed forest, past Piatra Socolău and across two clearings to the Stânișoara mountain pasture. The trail then climbs below the Mihailecu Ridge and continues along the ridge, with its karst formations, to the 1,917-meter-high Vf. Mihailecu; from there, it descends to Lacul Vinderel. The route thus links sections of the valley and forest with a ridge crossing. Trail conditions may change; check conditions before setting out.
Another route is named Paltin–Lespedea–Lupului–Obcina–Drahmirov. From Valea Lespedea, it follows DJ 187 for about ten kilometers, parallel to the Ruscova River, before turning into Valea Lupului. From there, a cart track leads to the Obcina Ridge. The descent through Valea Drahmirov also follows a cart track and returns to DJ 187. The two descriptions outline different routes: one goes via Stânișoara and the Mihailecu Ridge to Lacul Vinderel, while the other goes via Lupului and Obcina through Valea Drahmirov.
The waterways also shape the recreational opportunities. Rapids and cascades in the Ruscova and Dragmirov valleys are considered attractions for water sports using inflatable boats. This activity takes place in summer at the confluence of the Ruscova and Vișeu, when the water is warm. Check local water conditions and operator services before your trip.
