From the base of the Turnul Ștefan, the panorama stretches across the entire city of Baia Mare. The Municipality of Baia Mare also offers art history, folk architecture, a planetarium and destinations for outdoor activities. You can tailor your stay to whichever of these discoveries best matches your interests in art, technology, history or landscapes.
Art and Architectural History
The Turnul Ștefan was built in the 15th century as the bell tower of the former Church of Saint King Stephen. Its panorama offers a view across the entire city. The Muzeul Judeţean de Artă „Centrul Artistic Baia Mare“ connects art with the history of an older building: it was constructed in 1748, modernised over time, and has housed the museum since 1984.
The art museum’s collection comprises more than 4,000 works. The permanent exhibition „Centrul Artistic Baia Mare. Repere europene între tradiţii şi inovaţii“ offers a distinct perspective on the city’s art history: it features more than 300 works by artists who have worked and created art in Baia Mare since 1896. The collection size and the exhibition highlight different aspects—from the scale of the museum’s holdings to a selection that explores artistic activity in Baia Mare over an extended period.
Folk Architecture and Mining History
The Muzeul Satului Baia Mare focuses on folk architecture from four ethnographic regions of Maramureș: Lăpuș, Chioar, Maramureșul Voievodal and Codru. Within the architectural ensemble, the Șura Valea Vinului is the most spacious agricultural outbuilding. Those interested in architectural forms will find here a different way into the region’s cultural history than in the city’s art collections.
A further historical theme is explored through the mining history collection at the Muzeul Judeţean de Istorie şi Arheologie Maramureş. It comprises around 1,500 objects, including tools, ore transport equipment, lighting equipment for underground use, documents and photographs. The variety of objects makes clear that the collection covers not only individual tools, but also transport, lighting, and written and visual records of mining.
Planetarium and Nature Destinations
The Planetariu Baia Mare opened in 1969 as Romania’s first public planetarium. It offers dynamic, interactive audiovisual astronomy shows. Its hybrid system combines the Skymaster ZKP4 optical LED projector with the ROVER digital full-dome projector by RSA Cosmos. The digital projector was added in 2020. If you are interested in astronomy and science communication, the shows offer a different focus from the historic collections and buildings.
Outdoor destinations are also part of Baia Mare’s appeal. The „Arboretul de Castan Comestibil Baia Mare“ nature reserve lies within the city’s administrative area. Lacul Firiza is one of the local destinations for outdoor activities. For a hike, the Baia Mare – Valea Usturoi – Vârful Pleștioara route is a specific option: it is marked with a red cross. Check trail conditions and markings before setting out.
