The Someș flows through Comuna Satulung, which lies in the Baia Mare Basin. Key features of the commune include a protected oak forest, two Teleki Castles in Satulung and Pribilești, churches, and local fruit processing.

Landscape and waters

The “Padurea Bavna” oak forest nature reserve is located in Fersig and covers 26 hectares. It is classified as an IUCN Category IV protected area. Its size and protected status give the area a clearly defined role among the commune’s natural attractions.

Lake Oanei lies in the Oana Valley and covers 1 hectare. It has fishing platforms. Lake Răchitișa is used for fishing by the county association of hunters and anglers. The waters therefore differ in their connection to fishing: at Lake Oanei, the platforms are the specific feature, while at Răchitișa, it is the use by the county association. If you plan to visit either body of water, check access arrangements in advance.

Teleki Castles and churches

The two Teleki Castles have distinct histories. The Teleki Castle complex in Satulung is listed as a historic monument. It reached its present size in 1891 and was known for its library of 4,000 volumes. The Teleki Castle in Pribilești was built as a summer residence in the 1870s and 1880s and took its final form around 1897 in the Neo-Renaissance style. It is a historic monument with the code MM-II-m-A-04609. The dates refer to different building histories: 1891 refers to the size of the castle in Satulung, while around 1897 refers to the final form of the one in Pribilești.

The churches in Satulung also offer insights into the area’s cultural history. The Orthodox church was completed in stone in 1899; its oldest bell dates from 1637. The Reformed church has room for 50 to 60 worshippers. The bell’s date is well before the Orthodox church’s completion, while the capacity of the Reformed church describes a different aspect of the building.

Local tradition and getting there

Plum and apple cultivation is more prevalent in Fersig. There are small, simply equipped distilleries there, where stills are set up to produce țuică. Fruit growing and distillation complement the area’s natural attractions with a local agricultural tradition.

Fersig railway station makes it easier to reach Comuna Satulung and is on main line 400. If you plan to travel by train, check the timetable for your travel date. This allows you to factor rail travel in as a separate part of your accommodation planning.

This lets you match the main focus of your trip with the specific place names.
