Slobozia can be explored through distinct historical layers and varied landscapes: a monastery complex preserves the history of its architecture and furnishings, while parks and a large protected area reveal another side of the place. When planning your trip, you can first consider whether to focus on churches and museums or on green spaces and events.

Monastic history, churches and museums

Mănăstirea Slobozia preserves a founding history dating back to 1634. The present-day church was completely rebuilt in 1842. Its furnishings include an iconostasis from the first half of the 19th century. It contains a cross from the older iconostasis, dating back to the 17th century. The history of the complex thus brings together different periods of construction and furnishings.

Other churches also lead visitors into different centuries: the wooden church ā€žSf. Nicolaeā€œ dates from 1748 and is listed as a historic monument. Biserica ā€žAdormirea Maicii Domnuluiā€œ in the Bora district dates from 1864 and is also listed. The dates make the two churches distinct stops for anyone interested in the history of religious architecture.

The ā€žMunicipiul Sloboziaā€œ archaeological site is also listed as a historic monument. It includes a Neolithic settlement of the Boian culture from the 5th millennium BC, as well as medieval settlements from the 9th to 11th centuries and from the 17th to 18th centuries. These periods reach far beyond the more recent history of the churches and add another dimension to Slobozia’s historical landscape.

At the Muzeul Județean Ialomița, the permanent exhibition is titled ā€žOmul și rĆ¢ul. Evoluția comunităților umane Ć®n Bazinul Ialomițeiā€œ. The title places people and the river, and the development of human communities in the Ialomița Basin, at its centre. The Muzeul Național al Agriculturii describes its profile as unique in Romania. Together, the two museums offer different thematic points of interest, without limiting their exhibitions to the same story.

The Monumentul Eroilor is also part of the historical picture. It was inaugurated in 1932; Romanian and foreign soldiers who died in the First World War are buried there. The churches, archaeological site and monument each highlight a different aspect: architectural history, early periods of settlement and remembrance of the fallen.

Parks and protected areas

Parcul Tineretului covers 17.3 hectares. The Coridorul Ialomiței, a protected area of national interest, is on a much larger scale: it extends across the territory of Slobozia, has been part of the Natura 2000 network since 2017, and covers 26,727 hectares. The comparison helps with thematic orientation: one is a single park, the other a protected area extending beyond the city limits.

Pădurea Peri is a recreational area with barbecue spots and a space for festivals and competitions. Two kilometres from Slobozia lies Parcul de vacanță Hermes, with horse and pony stables and a miniature replica of the Eiffel Tower. As facilities may change, it is advisable to check the current services before visiting.

Events and travel interests

In 2026, FREELAND Festival reached its fifth chapter in Pădurea Peri, bringing together music, community and nature. Several editions of the festival and the ā€žIonel Perleaā€œ competition are documented in Slobozia: a national singing and conducting competition took place in 2019; the 2025 international edition included a singing competition. These examples show different event formats, but do not establish an unchanged sequence or future dates. If you want to plan a trip around a festival, check the dates of the edition you wish to attend.

When choosing a hotel in Slobozia, your own priorities can guide your decision: churches, the monument and the archaeological site suit a focus on history, while parks and the protected area offer a different emphasis. To take both into account, you can plan around specific interests and check event dates separately.
