The Cetatea Deva is a striking starting point for a cultural stay in Diemrich: the fortress combines a distinctive setting with a history dating back to the 13th century. Other buildings and collections offer insights into periods ranging from the Renaissance to 20th-century architecture and public art.

Fortress, Landscape and Views

The Cetatea Deva was first documented in 1269. It stands on a 378-meter-high volcanic cone where the Mureș forms a gorge between the Munții Metaliferi and the Munții Poiana Ruscă. From the summit, the view stretches across the Mureș Valley. The fortress offers a chance to take in both the striking landform and the river’s setting.

The restored fortress can be reached via hiking trails and a funicular. The funicular route is 278 meters long, covers an elevation difference of 158 meters and has a capacity of 16 people. The trails and funicular provide two different ways to reach the same destination. The funicular specifications describe its route, elevation difference and capacity.

Magna Curia and Its Collections

Magna Curia brings together architectural history and the collections of the Muzeul Civilizației Dacice și Romane. After 1615, the building was expanded and remodeled in the Renaissance style under Prince Gabriel Bethlen. The work was led by architect Giacomo Resti da Verna. Diemrich’s historic center encompasses the area around Magna Curia.

The museum’s collections cover a range of periods and disciplines. They include holdings in prehistoric, Dacian, Roman, early medieval and medieval archaeology, as well as numismatics, history and art. There are also ethnographic and natural science collections, including botany, paleontology and mineralogy. Visitors interested in the region’s history will therefore find perspectives on art and natural sciences alongside archaeological subjects.

Architecture from the 19th to the 20th Century

The present-day Teatrul de artă dramatică Deva was completed in 1911. It was designed by Austro-Hungarian architects Marcell Komor and Jakab Deszo. Floral motifs and bands with garlands on the main façade showcase elements of the Secession style. The building can thus be understood not only through its year of construction, but also through specific details of its façade.

The design and completion of Casa Dr. Petru Groza took place in different years: Horia Creangă designed the house between 1927 and 1929 in his Bucharest studio. He is considered a representative of the Cubist movement. A company from Arad completed the construction work at the end of 1930. This chronology makes clear that the design phase preceded the completion of the work.

Another notable site is Casina Română at Piața Unirii 9, a registered historic monument. The building was constructed between 1847 and 1856 and extended in 1903. It served as the headquarters of the Casina Națională Maghiară din Deva, a cultural association open to intellectuals from Hunedoara County. The site therefore represents the cultural history of an association as well as the history of a building.

Churches and Public Art

The tower of the old Orthodox church was built in 1727 and is the only fully preserved part of a church dating from 1640 to 1645. The dates for the Reformed church reach further back: its predecessor was documented as a town church in 1332, while the present church was consecrated in 1910. The two examples illustrate different ways of dating surviving structures and historical references.

Public art in Diemrich can also be linked to specific names and dates. The city park was laid out as a public urban space between 1886 and 1893. In the park below the Cetatea Deva stands the statue of King Decebal, created by Professor Radu Moga (1905–1950) of Liceul Avram Iancu in Brad. It was unveiled on August 6, 1937; its pedestal bears four bronze bas-reliefs. The Horia, Cloșca și Crișan statue ensemble complements these monuments with bronze busts by sculptor Ion Vlasiu.
