Topliţa can be explored through two distinctive themes: the municipality’s landscape and the industrial heritage of its blast furnace. The municipality of Topliţa lies on the western slope of the Poiana-Ruscă Mountains, between the Cerna Valley and the Mureş Valley. It is also part of Ținutul Pădurenilor, an ethnofolkloric and geographical region where traditions and folk art have been preserved.
Landscape and Protected Area
The Cheile Cernei area is a national nature reserve of the “mixed area” type. Cheile Cernei occupies about three percent of the municipality of Topliţa. The Cheile Cernei protected complex covers 512.9 hectares; 35.2 percent of its area lies within the municipality of Topliţa. These figures answer two different questions about area: the share of the municipality occupied by Cheile Cernei and the share of the protected complex located within the municipality. The area is designated for the protection of the Asperulo-Fagetum forest habitat, code 9130.
The landscape of the municipality of Topliţa is characterized by stepped landforms divided into long ridges, reaching heights of about 1,300 metres. Geologically, the municipality consists mainly of metamorphic crystalline rocks, with high ridges and steep slopes. Trout and chub are found in the flowing waters of the Topliţa–Hăşdău area.
Blast Furnace and Regional History
Built in 1781 in Topliţa, in the Cerna Valley, the blast furnace was the first modern blast furnace in the Poiana-Ruscă Mountains. It began operating on 1 July, and continued until 1837. The ruins of the Topliţa blast furnace are a historic monument dating from 1781, located in Zona Morii and bearing the LMI code HD-II-m-A-03468. A day-trip route through Ținutul Pădurenilor descends the Cerna Valley to Topliţa and includes the ruins. The route thus connects the valley with a specific destination linked to industrial history.
There are further historical points of interest in the area around Topliţa. In the lower part of the village of Vălari stands Biserica de lemn Sf. Nicolae, a wooden church dendrochronologically dated to 1677 and a rare surviving example of sacred wooden architecture. Dendrochronology dates wood by examining its annual rings; the year thus places the building in a specific period. On Măgura Topliţa, traces point to historic gold mining near the Topliţa stream. The Lacul Cinciş recreation area lies in the surroundings of Topliţa, at the entrance to the municipality.
Highlights for Your Trip

The day-trip route connects the Cerna Valley with the blast furnace ruins; the other places and landscape features mentioned offer further perspectives on the municipality and its surroundings.
