Peștenița brings together archaeological evidence, a church connection to Peșteana and local Easter customs. To find your way around, it helps to distinguish between the similarly sounding names: Peșteana is a separate nearby reference point, while Peștenița is the place itself. Some nearby destinations are also in Peșteana rather than Peștenița.

Location and Orientation

Peștenița lies in a valley west of Peșteana and was formerly also called “Pesteana Mică.” The local road DC91 leads from Peșteana to Peștenița; a municipal plan from 2024 describes it as partially paved. This makes the road a specific landmark for getting there. The wider geographic setting includes the Bianu River, also called Peștenița, which runs for 7 km within the Densuș commune. The place name and the river name refer to different things; the length given refers to the river’s course within the commune.

Archaeology and Nature in the Surrounding Area

The archaeological site “Situl arheologic de la Peşteniţa” lies to the left of the road to Peștenița, 200 m from the railway crossing. The site is associated with settlement traces from the Roman period as well as from the Bronze Age Wietenberg culture. The two periods can be distinguished: Wietenberg refers to the Bronze Age, while the other traces are from the Roman period.

A second, similarly named site lies instead in nearby Peșteana: “Situl arheologic de la Peşteniţa – Haltă” is located on the bank of the Ortovarniţa stream, north of the CFR halt and east of the road to Peșteana. The site is associated with settlement traces from the Middle Neolithic Vinča culture, the Bronze Age Balta-Sărată culture, the Roman period and the Middle Ages. In comparison, this sequence of periods starts earlier than at the site in Peștenița and extends through the Middle Ages; the Roman period is the point they have in common.

Mlaștina de la Peșteana is also located in Peșteana. It is a botanical nature reserve and a national protected area in IUCN Category IV, covering 2 ha. It is part of Geoparcul Dinozaurilor „Țara Hațegului”. The area therefore brings together archaeological sites and a botanical protected area as distinct points of interest.

Church and Easter Traditions

The church in Peștenița is a branch church of the Peșteana parish in the Hațeg deanery. The church is dedicated to Saint Theodore Tyron. The dedication names the saint to whom the church is dedicated.

The local Paștile Mici tradition in Peștenița includes Alergatul prescurii and împușcatul cocoșului—the shooting of a rooster. A nedee is held in Peștenița in the first week after Easter. If you would like to plan your stay around it, check the specific date for the year in question in advance.

For your planning, it is worth connecting the place names with the points of interest: archaeological traces can be found in Peștenița and nearby Peșteana, while the church and Paștile Mici customs are associated specifically with Peștenița. The reserve adds a botanical point of interest to the surrounding area. This will help you decide which of these features matter for your stay.
