Densuș Commune brings together two distinct themes for visitors: churches and historical traces in Densuș and Peșteana, alongside a landscape shaped by volcanic formations. There is also a village museum and an educational program at Casa Vulcanilor, where visits are only possible by reservation. When planning your stay, you can therefore choose how to balance architectural and local history, geological features, and a program that needs to be arranged in advance.
Churches and historical traces
The Biserica „Sfântul Nicolae“ in Densuș dates from the 12th to 13th centuries. In Peșteana, the Biserica „Sf. Prooroc Ilie“ is a historic monument dating from the 14th to 15th centuries. Casa Alexe Breasovay in Peșteana is also designated a historic monument; it dates from the 18th century. These different dates offer a guide to the periods in which the buildings were constructed, though they do not all belong to the same era.
The Biserica „Pogorârea Sfântului Duh“ in Peșteana has a specific architectural feature. The historic monument bears the identification code HD-II-m-A-03405. Its nave is rectangular, with the bell tower attached on the west side. The Reformed church in Peșteana was first mentioned in 1714; this date refers to its first recorded mention. Densuș is also home to the „Bustul lui Ovid Densușianu“ monument.
Museum and geological landscape
The Muzeul Satului Hațegan is housed in a traditional wooden house in Peșteana. Its collections include ethnography, local history and numismatics. To reach the museum from Hațeg, take the DN 68 to Totești, then continue on the DJ 687G. This gives you a specific sequence of roads to use when planning your journey.
Mlaștina de la Peșteana is a national protected area, a botanical nature reserve in IUCN Category IV, and part of the Geoparcul Dinozaurilor „Țara Hațegului“. The Dealurile Vulcanice din Densuș offer a different perspective on the landscape: their hills, of volcanic origin, were shaped by erosion. Rare geological formations include ash cones and solidified lava. Here, natural and geological history stand alongside the historic buildings as a distinct focus of the region.
Casa Vulcanilor: Program and access
Casa Vulcanilor offers nature walks, scientific experiments, fossil-hunting activities and rock collecting. The educational program „Explorator la Casa Vulcanilor“ of Geoparcul Internațional UNESCO Țara Hațegului is aimed at children, teenagers and adults. It uses the facilities at Casa Vulcanilor and Livada Senzorială. Visits and educational programs are available only by advance reservation, so arrange your reservation before your visit.
For orientation: Casa Vulcanilor is 3 km from Biserica Sf. Nicolae din Densuș, in the direction of the village of Ștei. The final stretch is a 300 m uphill walk from the main road along a moderately difficult forest path. This information is useful when planning your visit, especially if you want to combine the educational program with the other themes of your stay.
A wider route
The Geopark’s 26 km Drumul Vulcanilor route passes through Hațeg, Densuș, Ștei and Peșteana. It places these locations in a wider regional context and complements the individual cultural, museum and nature themes with a broader sense of direction.
