You can get to know Ilieni through two distinct aspects: its historic buildings, with specific dates, and Balta Lunca Ilieni at the foot of the forest. The manor houses and the Roman Catholic church invite you to consider the history of the village chronologically, while the two lakes turn your attention to fishing and picnicking. When planning your stay, you can decide whether to focus on the history of the buildings, the surrounding landscape, or both.
Manor houses and architectural history
Bornemissza Manor House dates from the 18th century. Bakó House in Ilieni was built in 1793; Séra Manor House is a listed historic building dating from 1811. The dates show a chronological sequence and differing levels of precision: Bornemissza is assigned to a century, while Bakó and Séra are assigned specific years. Séra Manor House houses a museum of literary history. Here, a historic building and a literary-history theme come together. If you would like to visit the museum, check visiting arrangements in advance.
The present-day Roman Catholic church adds another point of reference to this timeline. It was built in 1867–1868 and consecrated by Fogarasy Mihály on 22 June 1869. The information distinguishes the construction period from the later consecration. Alongside the manor houses, the church stands as a separate point of cultural and historical interest; its date shows that the history of the village does not end with the older buildings of the 18th and early 19th centuries.
Lakes, forest and route
Balta Lunca Ilieni comprises two lakes specifically created for fishing and picnics, and is located at the foot of the Ilieni forest. Facilities and conditions may change. If fishing or a picnic is part of your stay, check the current situation before your visit. This lets you plan around the activities mentioned without assuming that conditions will remain unchanged.
The route known as “Drumul verde” also passes through Ilieni. If you are interested in cycling or hiking, you can include this connection to the village in your plans. It complements the activities at the lakes with another option, without implying a specific itinerary for your stay.
Getting there and cultural context
Ilieni is 7 kilometres from the county seat of Sfântu Gheorghe and is easy to reach by car. If travelling by train, the station’s location is important for planning: Ilieni station is farther from Ilieni than from Sfântu Gheorghe; the remaining distance is covered on foot. Factor in this walk after arrival when planning your onward journey into the village. The travel options described therefore differ: no walk is mentioned after the car journey, whereas train travellers walk from the station.
A clearly dated cultural event is “Zilele Comunei Ilieni”: in 2024, the 25th edition of this long-standing event took place. It adds a more recent, dated glimpse of Ilieni’s cultural life to the history of its buildings.
