Techirghiol brings together several distinct themes for a stay: its salt-rich lake, a long spa history and churches with their own historical backgrounds.
Salt Lake and Protected Area
Lake Techirghiol is Romania’s largest salt lake by area. It is 7,500 metres long, up to 9 metres deep and has a salinity of over 90 g/l. Its length, depth and salinity give a concrete impression of the dimensions and characteristics of this body of water.
The Natura 2000 site Lacul Techirghiol is also part of the natural environment. It includes areas in Techirghiol and in the neighbouring municipalities of 23 August, Eforie, Topraisar and Tuzla on the Black Sea coast. The protected-area designation therefore extends beyond the town’s name. If you are interested in nature and designated protected areas, you can view the lake both as a body of water in its own right and in a broader geographical context.
Spa Town with a Long History
Techirghiol has been known as a spa town since 1899. That year, a maritime asylum with beds and facilities for mud baths was inaugurated. The town’s spa history can therefore be traced back to the late 19th century.
The Sanatorium Balnear și de Recuperare Techirghiol offers balneophysical treatments for inpatients in its three departments, as well as outpatient treatments. Churches and Their Stories
The wooden church of the Sfânta Maria Monastery has preserved its complete painted decoration. It was built in the 18th century by the village community of Maiorești in Mureș County and brought to the monastery in Techirghiol in 1951. Its construction, origins, relocation and preserved paintings offer several points of interest if you are interested in religious architecture and history.
The German Church of Techirghiol, completed in 1934, offers a different perspective. Pastor Pieger contributed to its construction and led the German community formed by ethnic Germans from Dobruja. The wooden church draws attention to its construction history, origins and relocation; the German Church’s historical milestones include a specific year of completion and the contribution of a community leader.
Shoreline, Beach and Activities
Parcul Faleza Techirghiol is located on the lake promenade and has a cycle path. Plaja Minerva lies between Techirghiol and Eforie Nord and covers 14,000 m². It also has a pedestrian promenade, and the cycle path is more than two kilometres long. These places offer different features for spending time by the lake and at the beach, without treating the two areas as one and the same.
Plaja Minerva has three lifeguard stations, three changing cabins, three sanitary facilities with showers and two first-aid stations. As operational availability may change, check which facilities are currently open before visiting.
Piscina Techirghiol has a swimming pool that is 50 metres long and 25 metres wide. A children’s pool with three water slides is located nearby. If you are planning to visit the pool, check the current access conditions in advance.
