Get to know Lumina through its waterways, churches and a municipal park project. The town lies on flat terrain on both sides of the Valea Cogealiei valley; Valea Neagră crosses the settlement from northwest to south. The churches’ building histories also tell of different periods. If you are looking for a hotel in Lumina, you can therefore plan your trip around the landscape, religious architecture and local history.

Valleys and waterways

The Valea Cogealiei valley’s catchment area covers about 1,900 hectares, and the maximum slope is 3 percent. The valley drains into the Poarta Albă–Midia Canal; Lumina borders its navigable channel. Valea Neagră, by contrast, carries water year-round and crosses Lumina from northwest to south. The two valleys therefore represent different geographical features: Valea Cogealiei connects a catchment area with the canal, while Valea Neagră flows through the settlement. Remnants of natural vegetation grow in small areas along Valea Neagră and in the Cogealia marsh. Those interested in the landscape can consider these named waterways and areas of vegetation as specific features of Lumina. A catchment area is the area from which water drains into a valley.

Churches and building history

The first church in Lumina was built in 1907 and belonged to the Evangelical denomination. In 1940, it was taken over by the German population, which had left the country as part of the population exchange; it was consecrated in 1941.

The Church of the Holy Apostles Peter and Paul was built between 1999 and 2009; it was consecrated on June 14, 2009. Its floor plan is cruciform. An octagonal tower rises above the naos, the church’s central space; the church has three towers in total. The solid oak entrance doors were carved in Maramureș. Taken together, the two building histories show different periods: the first church at the beginning of the 20th century and the second building phase at the turn of the 21st century.

Park and community event

Parc Central Comuna Lumina is a modern park built by the local administration. It covers 3,400 square meters and was completed in April 2016. Alongside the churches and waterways, it brings a recent municipal park project into view.

“Zilele Comunei Lumina” is a traditional community event; the ninth edition is mentioned. The program for May 9, 2026, included the “Turul pe două roți” bicycle tour at 11 a.m., on the route Primărie – Strada Morii – Strada Mare. The date and route offer a specific glimpse of this edition’s program and add an example of a planned bicycle tour to the local history.
